Downpour Halts Softball in Top of Fourth

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah downpour was not enough to cool the Bethune-Cookman softball squad, as the Wildcats belted out a six run, seven hit third inning, pulling ahead 9-1 before severe weather paused game three against Savannah State in the top of the fourth Saturday morning in Savannah, Georgia.

Action was halted during the top of the fourth, with one out, Wanda Darby at the plate with two balls and Geena Capitini at two following her second double of the game.

Before the stoppage of play due to lighting, the Wildcats collected 11 hits as a team, jumping out to a 9-1 lead over the Tigers during the series finale.

Heading the fiery B-CU bats was Capitini who had already collected a perfect 3-for-3 plate appearance, including two doubles and three RBIS.

Calesha Shelley, Sophia Ortega, and Kaitlin Alamprese each finished the half-game with two hits while Shelley added a stolen base to her resume and Ortega and Alamprese combined for five RBIs.

Sophomore Sabrina Anguiano threw three innings for the Wildcats, giving up three Tiger hits and no earned runs.

Game action will only resume if necessary prior to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, beginning May 7 in Ormond Beach, Florida.

The Wildcats wrap up their 2015 regular season Saturday, May 2 during day one of the three-game series against cross-state rival Florida A&M. Game one of the Saturday doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while the series finale and B-CU “Senior Day” are set to begin Sunday, May 3 at noon in Daytona Beach.
