Wildcats Earn Seventh Straight with NCCU Sweep

DURHAM, N.C. – The Bethune-Cookman softball team earned its seventh-straight win, remaining unbeaten in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play as the Wildcats completed their second consecutive league sweep with a 7-0 series finale victory over North Carolina Central University on Wednesday, April 8 in Durham, North Carolina.

In typical Calesha Shelley fashion, the senior opened the first inning with a bunt for a single before advancing to second on a throwing error by NCCU's short stop. Mariah Davis followed laying down a sacrifice bunt, allowing Shelley to take third, as Sophia Ortega's double to center field scored Shelley, giving the 'Cats an early 1-0 lead.

Wildcat pitcher Sabrina Anguiano saw her first strike out of the contest, during a one-two-three inning for B-CU in the bottom of the first.

On top 1-0, the 'Cats added to their lead in the second as Melissa Berouty led off with a walk. Bryanna Campos followed, beating out her sac bunt to shortstop and moving Berouty safely to second. After a Geena Capitini fly out to right field, Berouty took third on a NCCU error.

Shelley's second single of the game through the left side, scored Berouty before the second inning ended, B-CU on top 2-0.

The Eagles left two on base in the bottom half of the second, after Angiuano picked up her second K with runners on second and third.

A big third inning for the Wildcats saw three more runs on two hits, led by singles from Davis and Kaitlin Alamprese before Capitini led off the fourth with a solo homer over the center field fence.

As the B-CU defense continued to hold, the Wildcats tacked a final run to their lead in the sixth, finishing one-run shy of the eight-plus run-rule advantage, with the 7-0 victory.

Shelley led the Wildcat offense finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two stolen bases.

Angiuano (10-20) collected her seventh-straight victory throwing a complete game, only allowing three NCCU hits. The sophomore hurler struck out five batters while only walking one during the MEAC victory.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, April 18 as Bethune-Cookman welcome North Carolina A&T to Sunnyland Park for a three game MEAC series. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. in Daytona Beach, Florida.
