@BCUSoftball Advances with Hampton Shutout

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Sophia Ortega finished perfect at the plate for Bethune-Cookman softball as the Wildcats shutout Hampton, 8-0 during the opening round of the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Ortega finished a perfect 2-for-2 at bat while collecting two runs and a RBI.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the field for the Wildcats in the first, senior Calesha Shelley led off for B-CU with a single over the first baseman's head, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Mariah Davis, moving Shelley to second. Shelley then took third on a passed ball.

A Sophia Ortega walk, put runners on first and second followed by a stolen base from Ortega.

With two outs Geena Capitini sent a double to the center field fence, scoring both of her teammates as a Shamaria Engram single to left field scored Capitini. Engram took third on a passed ball before Wanda Darby beat out a shot to short stop, scoring Engram and giving the 'Cats an early 4-0 lead to end the first.

After retiring three more Pirate batters, a Davis RBI single in the second tacked a single run to the B-CU lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Nothing for either team in the third kept the Wildcat lead at five, before Hampton earned its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a shot down the right field line.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Ortega doubled down the left field line scoring Davis before Melissa Berouty singled to center field and scored Ortega from second.

With the 7-0 lead, the Pirates made their second pitching change before Berouty scored on a passed ball with two outs giving the Wildcats the rule-run advantage, 8-0 lead.

A groundout to third and popup to left field opened the fifth inning for B-CU before Hampton picked up its second and third hits of the game. With runners on first and second Wildcat hurler Sabrina Anguiano fanned her first batter of the contest, looking, ending the game with an 8-0, fifth inning victory.

Anguiano threw all five innings for the Wildcats giving up three hits in the shutout.

Bethune-Cookman is set to face the No. 1 seed from the north, Delaware State tonight (May 7) at 7 p.m., at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Florida.
