@BCUWBB Earns Convincing Win Over Coppin State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Four Wildcats finished in double-figures, while two earned double-doubles as the Bethune-Cookman women's basketball team handed the Coppin State Eagles their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss of the season, during a convincing 69-56 home win Saturday, Jan. 16 in Moore Gym.

The redshirt junior duo of Taylor Houston (Raleigh, N.C.) and Kailyn Williams (New Orleans, La.) each collected double-doubles during the trump. Houston poured in 17 points and pulled down 11 boards while Williams earned her sixth season double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the first quarter as both squads exchanged baskets during the first eight minutes.

It was a Kendra Cooper (Spring, Texas) three ball that pushed the Wildcats on top one, followed by an Ashanti Hunt (Washington, D.C.) bucket in the paint during the final 47 seconds that gave B-CU the 13-10 first quarter lead.

After B-CU pulled ahead by five in the second, it was a Coppin State Amber Griffin steal and bucket during the Wildcat inbounds under the Eagle's basket that brought the score within one (24-23) with 4:06 left in the half.

Next trip down the court Cooper knocked down a trey from the corner for the Wildcats and was fouled on the shot. Following the 3:59 media timeout, Cooper converted on the four-point play, putting the 'Cats back up five.

Momentum remained in favor of B-CU for the final four minutes as the Wildcats took a 35-29 lead into the locker room.

Back-to-back buckets in the paint for Williams opened the third quarter as B-CU took command after the intermission.

The Wildcats outscored the Eagles 21-8 during the third stanza, leading 56-37 heading into the final period.

B-CU saw its largest lead of the contest after Williams opened the fourth with the hoop and harm, putting the Wildcats on top by 22 (59-37) after knocking down the foul shot.

Despite being outscored 19-13 in the fourth, the Wildcats held onto the 69-56 victory.

In addition to Williams and Houston, Cooper added a game-best 18 points, while Hunt collected 11.

For Coppin State, Janelle Lane led the way with 15 points while Amber Griffin and Keena Samuels added 11 each.

Bethune-Cookman moved back over .500 on the season at 9-8 while winning its second-straight MEAC contest with a 3-1 league record.

The Eagles fell to 5-10 overall while suffering their first conference loss of the season, leaving them 2-1.
