DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Brandon Tabb could score Monday night. Trouble was, so could Jacksonville.
Â
Tabb rediscovered his three-point range in a 16-point second half, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats (2-7) dropped a 76-66 decision to the visiting Dolphins at the ICI Center.
The junior had four three-pointers in the final 20 minutes, including a string of three straight as he brought the Wildcats back from a 15-point deficit to 59-56 with just under eight to play.
The Dolphins, however, never gave up their lead. Darius Dawkins buried his third three-pointer of the game to put Jacksonville ahead 68-61 with three minutes on the clock and the Wildcats simply couldn't gain ground.
Jacksonville shot 48 percent (25-52) from the field for the night, including a 53.3 percent effort in the first half that allowed them to take a 41-29 halftime lead. Most of those baskets were high percentage shots.
"We didn't guard tonight," said B-CU Head Coach
Gravelle Craig. "No matter what defense we were in, they were in the lane all night.
"They [Jacksonville] drove the lane for lay-ups against a zone defense," Craig added. "That should never happen."
Another issue that haunting B-CU tonight is free throw shooting. The Wildcats converted only 52.9 percent of their free throws and left eight points on the line.
"We have work to do," said Craig. "We have a month to get ready for conference, and we will have a couple of tough opponents that will help us ready. We have to keep working and find a way; make a way."
Reggie Baker scored 16 for B-CU, while Jeffrey Altidort had six assists.
Â
This was the Wildcats' sixth straight loss and Craig knows he and his team must stay patient.
Â
"We just have to keep working," said Craig. "We have new guys, a young team… We have to keep grinding, and get better defensively. That's the biggest thing."
On Saturday, the Wildcats will face Florida College (0-2) at home.Â
