DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman softball suffered a pair of setbacks, after being swept by Savannah State during Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opening weekend at Sunnyland Park.
The Wildcats were edged 4-3 during game two of the series before falling 4-1 in the weekend finale.
Rookie Brianna Sanders led BCU at the plate during the doubleheader, finishing 3-for-6 on the day.
Game One
After an inning and a half were already in the books from the prior day, SSU pulled ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth off of a two-run Cortni Jones homer over the left field fence.
The WIldcats had an answer in the bottom of the fifth after a Mariah Davis double with Annie Bakenhus on base moved two into scoring position.
Sophomore Iesha Waters followed with a double of her own, scoring Bakenhus and Davis, knotting the score at two.
Sanders sent one to center field, scoring Waters, and giving the Wildcats the 3-2 lead in the fifth before the inning ended with three runs, three hits and one left on.
Back-to-back homers from SSU in the top of the sixth, gave the Tigers the one-run advantage, as they held on to the 4-3 lead for the final two innings.
Rookie Deidra Genera (3-8) suffered the Wildcat setback after giving up three hits and the go ahead homers for the Tigers in the sixth.
Game Two
It was all SSU during game two as the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings complete.
In the bottom of the sixth, BCU plated its lone run after a Wanda Darby lead off double put her in scoring position, and a Waters single scored her from third.
SSU added an unearned run in the top of the seventh before holding onto the 4-1 victory.
Bailey Conner (1-6) and Sabrina Anguiano split time on the mound during the third game of the series allowing seven combined hits and three earned runs while striking out three SSU batters.
Amanda Hallman threw a complete game for SSU allowing four hits, a single run and fanning four Wildcats at the plate.
Bethune-Cookman returns to action on Saturday, April 2 as the Wildcats head north to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies in Greensboro, North Carolina during a weekend three-game league series. Double header action begins on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
