The Wildcats (14-17 overall, 10-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) will enter next week's conference tournament at Norfolk, Va. as the fourth seed. They'll play Thursday night against the winner of the Savannah State - Delaware State.
South Carolina State (17-13,12-4) got 35 points from Eric Eaves as the Bulldogs snapped a five-game Wildcat winning streak.
Ricky Johnson gave Bethune-Cookman a 63-61 lead with 8:32 remaining, but the Bulldogs scored 11 unanswered points to take control.
Mario Moody double-doubled with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Johnson and Diamante Lewis added 10 each.
Bethune-Cookman hit its first three three-pointers and took early leads of nine points, the last on a Moody lay-up that made it 15-6, but the Bulldogs used 18 points from Eaves and an 18-18 effort at the free throw line to take a 44-38 halftime lead..
The Wildcats had a 60-59 lead on a LaRon Smith free throw with 10:09 to play.
