DeLAND, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman softball dropped pair during day one of the Hatter Classic, falling 3-1 to Wagner in the opening game,before suffering a 1-0 setback to the host Hatters in the nightcap on Friday, March 4 in Deland, Florida at the Patricia Wilson Field.
Sophomore Mariah Davis led the Wildcats offensively on the day finishing 3-for-7 at the plate, with the lone B-CU RBI.
Game One
During game one, the Wildcats played guests to the Seahawks.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Wagner added a single run to the board off a RBI double down the right field line from J Carlucci.
Again in the fifth the Seahawks added to their lead after scoring two runs on three hits.
With the 3-0 advantage in favor of Wagner heading into the top of the seventh, Melissa Berouty was walked during her third at bat of her senior season debut.
Fellow senior Wanda Darby pinch ran for Berouty before sophomore Bryanna Campos was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out.
Rookie Annie Bakenhus reached on a fielder's choice after Darby was caught at third, followed by a Mariah Davis single up the middle, scoring Campos from senior and giving the Wildcats their lone run of game one.
During the 3-1 setback, Davis finished with two of the five B-CU hits.
Sabrina Anguiano (0-8) suffered the loss after throwing 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and one run, while fanning four batters.
Game Two
The nightcap featured the host Hatters and Bethune-Cookman as the game became a battle on the mound.
Bakenhus, Davis and Iesha Waters earned the only three hits for the Wildcats during the loss, while Stetson turned its six hits into one run.
The lone run in the fifth for the Hatters proved to be enough after B-CU had no offensive answer, dropping the 1-0 shutout.
Rookie hurdler Deidra Genera (3-5) collected the Wildcat loss during game two, throwing a complete seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out seven batters.
The Wildcats return to the field, Saturday, March 5 during day two in Deland, as B-CU takes on Fairfield at 11 a.m., followed by a rematch with Wagner at 1:30 p.m.
