Softball 20-Hit Day Not Enough during Two Setbacks

DeLAND, Fla. – Errors and runners left on plagued Bethune-Cookman softball as the Wildcats dropped a 5-2 extra inning effort against Fairfield, before falling 8-7 in a rematch with Wagner on Saturday, March 4 during day two of the Hatter Classic at the Patricia Wilson Field.

Game One

After three-straight scoreless innings for both the Stags and B-CU, Fairfield struck first in the bottom the fourth, scoring an unearned run following an error at short.

The Wildcats answered in the top of the fifth when senior Wanda Darby led off with a single to right center.

Back at the top of the B-CU lineup, Annie Banekhus used a sac bunt to move Darby to second before Mariah Davis' single down the left field line scored Darby. Iesha Waters used a single to left center to score Davis from two, before the Wildcats left a pair on base and took the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth the Stags knotted the score at two scoring one on a leadoff single-run homer over left center.

Heading into the top of eighth B-CU was unable to make anything happen, before Fairfield took advantage of the runner placed on second after their leadoff batter was walked.

With runners on first and second a walk-off homer for the Stags ended the extra-run inning, 5-2.

B-CU left ten runners on during the setback.

Three B-CU hits, including a triple from Kaitlin Alamprese scored two runs in the sixth.

With Wagner leading 8-2, heading into the bottom half of the final inning, Annie led off with a single up the middle.

After a Davis fielder's choice, B-CU had two runners on with no outs.

With one out, Brianna Sanders pinch hit, using a single through the left side, loading the bases with Alamprese due up.

Alamprese earned her first season homer with a grand slam over left center, bringing the score to 8-6 before the Wildcats suffered the 8-7 setback.
