SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman opens its 2016-17 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday against Savannah State. Tip off will be approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
The Wildcats (3-10) are looking to snap a two-game losing streak and post their first road victory of the year after dropping their first eight and a neutral site contest.
Last year, Bethune-Cookman posted a 10-6 record in MEAC play and earned a first-round bye at the conference tournament, but had its season come to end with a 57-50 loss to Savannah State in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats are 40-40 in conference play in the
Gravelle Craig era.
Savannah State is also 3-10, with the last time out a 92-71 loss to East Tennessee State. The Tigers have a signature win to their credit this season, a 93-90 win at Oregon State.
B-CU UPDATE: The Wildcats were held to a season-low 41 points at UCF on Dec. 22 … Despite scoring just 15 points in his last two games,
Brandon Tabb is still a threat to win the MEAC scoring title. The junior is averaging 19.6 points per game, while Norfolk State's Jonathan Wade is averaging 19.7 … Tabb is sixth in the nation in 3FG per game (3.85) …
Quinton Forrest is fourth in the conference in field goal percentage ..
Reggie Baker is 15
th in the league in scoring with a 13.0 average … B-CU hasn't won in Savannah since a 55-29 decision on December 30, 2008.
SCOUTING SSU: Led by former B-CU Head Coach Horace Broadnax, the Tigers have gone from a plodding offense to a run-and-gun, three-point launching squad. They lead the lead in scoring with an 85 point per game clip and have cast up 531 three-pointers in 13 games this season … and have made a league-best 37.5 percent of them. However, Savannah State is also giving up 103.5 points per games, which would tie them with Oklahoma City for seventh in the NBA, but places the Tigers dead last among 347 Division I teams.  Dexter McClanahan leads the Tigers with an average a 14.6 points per game and is 37-81 (.457) from three-point range.
