DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Nothing in basketball is more graceful than a big man going coast-to-coast.
Alas, nothing in basketball is more groan-inducing than a big man trying to go coast-to-coast and not finishing.
Give Shantrez Davis credit. The moment was there late in Bethune-Cookman's 95-67 victory over Florida College Saturday. The defensive rebound was long. The middle of the court wide open. One less dribble.
However, the Florida College defender stopped before Davis anticipated. The Bethune-Cookman center threw up a soft jumper that caromed wildly off the backboard. Oh, well. It's not like he missed a wide-open dunk…Uh, yeah … so how 'bout that double-double Davis put up that helped the Wildcats improve to 3-0 at home with their second straight win?
"I promise I will not try that [going coast-to-coast] again," Davis laughed after posting a 16-point, 11-rebound night for his fourth double-double of the season.
While the Wildcats (3-3) were running and gunning and jacking up a school record 37 three-pointers en route to a scoring night better than the Hornets, Hawks, Thunder, Pelicans and Kings in 40 minutes, Davis was doing the work inside.
Florida College had no answer for his jumpers in the lane early as Davis started the game 6-6 from the field. Defensively, the visitors were held to just 27 percent shooting on their two-point attempts in the first half as the Wildcats opened up a 51-29 halftime lead.
"Shantrez dominates the paint," said senior
Brandon Tabb, who led B-CU with 19 points. Â "Whatever he does, that's him. He's so in control that the other team will try to double team him or he'll just kick the ball out. He can play."
The Wildcats' up-tempo game can be employed because of an inside effort like Davis, said B-CU Head Coach
Ryan Ridder.
"No one in this room is overlooking that," Ridder said "You break down the numbers, we play inside and out. We feel Shantrez is the best interior guy on the court every night. That allows our guards to going offensively."
Davis knows that.
"Without the rebounding, we can't do any of that running and gunning," Davis said. "I put a lot of pressure on myself to get every rebound, no matter how tired I am. Without that basketball in your hand, you can't do anything."
Soufiyane Diakite (15 points, eight rebounds, three steals) and
Isaiah Bailey (10 points, eight rebounds, six assists) had solid stat lines, while
David Francis came off the bench and scored 11 points on 5-6 shooting with six boards.
Â
The Wildcats scored six points in the opening minute and used 11-16 shooting to open up a 25-10 lead with 12:11 remaining onÂ
Houston Smith's tip in.
Florida College closed to 36-24, but Francis scored the final five points on an 11-0 Wildcat run that pushed their lead to 47-24.B-CU's biggest lead came at 88-55 on a Bailey three-pointer with 6:37 remaining.
The Wildcats travel to Jacksonville Thursday.
