BCU Welcomes George Mason, Ohio State to Sunnyland Park

Cats continue home stretch with a pair of midweek matchups

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball welcomes a pair of non-conference teams to Daytona Beach this week for three midweek contests at Sunnyland Park. The Wildcats host George Mason for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 14, followed by a single game against Ohio State on Wednesday, March 15.
 
Riding a season-long four-game winning streak, Bethune-Cookman (6-18) takes on the George Mason Patriots in a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. A season ago in Daytona Beach, the Wildcats swept a doubleheader against the Patriots on scores of 8-1 and 3-2, respectfully.
 
As for Ohio State, BCU takes on the Buckeyes for a single-game contest Wednesday at 1 p.m. The last time BCU took on Ohio State in 2013, it resulted in split decisions at the Jacksonville Tournament hosted by Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. The Buckeyes took the first meeting, 11-0, before BCU bounced back for a 4-3 victory the following day.
 
The Wildcats opened their current seven-game homestand last week with a doubleheader sweep of Western Carolina and Mount St. Mary's, respectfully.
 
BCU is led by freshman second baseman Ryan Jackson (Chino Hills, Calif.) with a league-leading .429 batting average. She is the current two-time reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week. The Ruben S. Ayala High School alum batted a team-high .636 across the four games for the Maroon and Gold. She would complete the stretch with two home runs, three RBIs and drawing three walks. From her second base position defensively, she recorded 10 putouts and six assists in 16 total attempts for a perfect fielding percentage.
 
Just behind Jackson is junior centerfielder Mariah Davis (Madera, Calif.) batting .413 on the year while leading the team in triples. In the field, she has a team second-best matching 41 putouts and two assists.
 
In the pitcher's circle, freshman Mariah Estrada (Palm Desert, Calif.) leads the team with a 3-3 record on the year, picking up two wins last week out of the bullpen. Estrada owns an ERA of 4.84 on the year with a pair of complete game performances in 50.2 innings worked altogether.
 
George Mason comes into the week at 2-12 overall, having won games against Cornell and Buffalo, respectively. The Patriots are led at the plate by Sydnee Wells with a .333 average, tied atop the team with two doubles and leading the squad with 10 hits on the campaign. The pitching is held down by Marina Vitalich with a 1-4 overall mark, and an ERA of just 1.76 in seven appearances.
 
As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes enter the week sporting a record of 10-6 overall. They are led by Lilli Piper with a .415 batting average and a .736 slugging percentage. Behind her is Bri Betschel with a .385 average at the plate and sitting a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts.
