BCU Drops Heartbreaker to Ohio State, 2-1

Wildcats leave bases loaded in the seventh

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was unable to take advantage as visiting Ohio State collected a 2-1 decision over the Wildcats in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park.

Bethune-Cookman (7-20) trailed 2-0 heading into the home-half of the seventh inning.

Ohio State (12-6) starting pitcher Morgan Ray had the Wildcats off-balance for almost the entire game. The right-hander allowed just one hit before eventually facing trouble in the seventh inning.

With one out for the Maroon and Gold, sophomore Annie Bakenhus walked and advanced into scoring position at second on an error charged to OSU first baseman Ashley Goodwin, as the throw from catcher Emily Clark fell from her glove trying to catch Bakenhus napping at first. BCU's Ryan Jackson, the back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, was walked in the next at-bat, spawning OSU to bring in Shelby Hursh from the bullpen.

Hursh would walk catcher Kaitlin Alamprese to load the bases, before Brianna Sanders hit into a fielder's choice that saw the Buckeyes defense elect to get the force at home for the second out of the inning.

Freshman Yvonne Siordia would pinch hit for Taylor Sherritt, then drawing a walk to bring in Jackson in order to cut the deficit at 2-1.

However, Hursh would collect the strikeout to end the game with the bases loaded for the Wildcats.

Ohio State began the scoring in the opening inning when Clark's RBI single deep in the hole at short crossed leadoff hitter Anna Kirk for the 1-0 lead.

The visitors added another run in the seventh when Lilli Piper scored on a throwing error charged to second baseman Jacki Smith.

The win went to Ray in the pitcher's circle, improving her at 1-2 on the year. She allowed just one hit – that hit being a double in the third inning by Campos, in 6.1 innings worked. Ray added two walks and five strikeouts. The save went to Hursh, picking up her first of the year.

The loss went to Sabrina Anguiano, dropping her record at 2-6 for the season. The Hacienda Heights, California senior went all seven innings on the rubber, allowing two unearned runs, scattering four hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Bethune-Cookman travels this weekend to the Michele Smith-Clearwater Parks & Rec Spring Tournament in Clearwater, Florida. The event begins Friday, March 17, as the Wildcats take on Saint Joseph's (4 p.m.) and Monmouth (6:15 p.m.).
