Wildcats score more runs than any other against Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Brianna Sanders and Yvonne Siordia each drove in two runs in Bethune-Cookman's 15-7 loss to No. 2 Florida on Wednesday night at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

The Wildcats (12-24) scored three runs in the first and finished the evening with the most runs for any Gators opponent this year.

Florida (30-2) answered Bethune-Cookman's start with a nine-run, two-out rally in the home-half of the first highlighted by Jordan Roberts' three-run homer and Nicole DeWitt's three-run shot.

The Gators extended their lead to 14-3 before Bethune-Cookman scored four in the top-half of the fourth inning.

The Wildcats took the early lead on Kaitlin Alamprese's single that brought in Mariah Davis and Iesha Waters, with Alamprese later scoring on errors by Florida.

Davis, Waters, Alamprese and Annie Bakenhus each registered two hits for the Wildcats on offense.

This was Bethune-Cookman Softball Head Coach Laura Watten's first game back in Gainesville since her 2005 team won the NCAA Gainesville [Fla.] Regional. The Wildcats' runs were the first in Gainesville since that regional (B-CU has played in four regional games in Gainesville since that time).

Bethune-Cookman returns home Saturday, April 1, welcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member North Carolina A&T to Sunnyland Park for a doubleheader. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. The series concludes Sunday with a single game.

HEAD COACH LAURA WATTEN QUOTES
On her return, in general…
"It was good to be back here. We played here a lot during my first stint.  I like coming here. I like this facility."

On pitchers remaining steady on the mound…
"We have to be better at keeping the ball down when we get two strikes or two outs against good hitters. They will pick us apart if we don't hit our spots and don't spin the ball and don't focus in on those key situations. The result will be 15 runs."

On two-out pitching…
"I was disappointed they put up most of those runs with two outs."

On what was learned by her team…
"We also learned we can compete. They [Florida] put the ball in play just like everyone else. We have to keep making things happen."

On the offensive production…
"Our offense did well. That's a good line [7 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors]. Defensively, we just have to be tougher when we're ahead."
