@BCUsoftball Falls On MEAC Championship Sunday

FAMU Wins 1-0 And 4-2; Anguiano, Jackson and Davis Named All-Tournament

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman saw its bid for a first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference softball title since 2004 fall short as Florida A&M downed the Wildcats 1-0 and 4-2 in the championship round Sunday at Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The Rattlers (23-30-1) took their fourth straight MEAC title, all coming against the Wildcats (24-33) on the final day.

Senior pitcher Sabrina Anguiano, whose three wins on Thursday and Friday put the Wildcats within one game of the championship, was named to the All-Tournament team, along with freshman Ryan Jackson  and junior Mariah Davis.

After getting shut out in the first game, Bethune-Cookman's offense came to life in the second inning of the second game when

Kailey Richard doubled home Kaitlin Alamprese and scored on an error to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Florida A&M scored four in the third, and Kenya Pereira shut down the Wildcat offense after that.

Bethune-Cookman loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by Alamprese, Taylor Sherritt and Richard, but could not score.

Joumesia Stoudemire's fifth-inning RBI coupled with Pereira's three-hit shutout led the Rattlers to the first-game victory.

Anguiano gave up just two earned runs in 29 2/3 innings during the tournament. Jackson was 7-16 from the plate, Davis was 5-17.

HEAD COACH LAURA WATTEN

"It's painful because I enjoyed this team. I wanted them to reach their goal on winning of championship. I'm hurting for them. I wanted this for the seniors because they've worked so hard,"

"There is the fact this a young team [11 freshman] and this was the first time they felt this."

"What more can you say about Sabrina?"

"We had one inning when we let things get out control. We had opportunities at the plate in both games. That's being young. We were trying too hard."
