DeLAND, Fla. - Led by four players in double-figures, including Soufiyane Diakite's fourth consecutive double-double, Bethune-Cookman University downed Volusia County rival Stetson University, 74-62, Monday at the Edmunds Center.
In the process, BCU (10-9) matched last season's win total and won its fifth straight under first year Head Coach Ryan Ridder. By topping the Hatters (10-10), BCU also defeated its second ASUN Conference opponent of the season on the road, marking the first time in program history BCU has downed two ASUN opponents in the same season.
The Wildcats never trailed in the game by staking the lead for 38:38. The largest Wildcat lead was 18 with 1:02 remaining that capped a 16-4 run over six minutes. Brandon Tabb paced the BCU scoring again with 18 points. He also recorded a season-high four steals. Isaiah Bailey and Shawntrez Davis each poured in 17 points, with Bailey adding seven rebounds and Davis had six boards. Diakite's double-double came from a game-high 15 rebounds and 10 points.Â
BCU scored first as Tabb converted a swipe into a dunk, and eventually the visitors pushed their lead to 10 at 10:51 on a Houston Smith tip-in.Â
Stetson's Divine Myles cut the lead to a basket with a lay-in at 3:19, but BCU flexed its muscles before the half as Tabb sank a three with 19 seconds to go and the Wildcats held a 34-24 advantage at halftime.
BCU won the rebounding battle, 44-32, including 13 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second chance points. BCU was 27-63 (42.9%) shooting, and held Stetson to 21-61 (34.4%).
The Wildcats return to MEAC play with a Jan. 20 road tilt at Delaware State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
