The Starting Five
1 Entering this weekend, BCU leads the MEAC in offensive rebounds (14.32), total rebounds (41.68), and blocks (74). Amongst the NCAA, it is fifth in offensive boards, seventh in total rebounds, and 99th in blocks.
2 After smashing Volusia County rival Stetson by a 74-62 score on Monday, BCU defeated two ASUN Conference opponents in the same season for the first time ever. On Nov. 30, BCU picked up a 77-66 victory at Jacksonville University
3 During the five-game win streak, BCU has out-rebounded its opponents by 52, and in each game has scored more second chance points than its opponent. Soufiyane Diakite has averaged 4.8 offensive rebounds in the span
4 Brandon Tabb ranks in the MEAC's top 4 in four three-point statistical categories- 3ptFGA (170), 3ptFGM (58), 3ptFG per-game (3.41), and 3ptFG % (34.1%)
5 BCU's 4-0 conference start marks its best since 2011, when the Wildcats raced out to a 5-0 march. The five January wins also put BCU in striking distance for the most January wins in program history. Six times have the Wildcats recorded eight victories in the month, but they have never gone unblemished in D1 history
Previously
Led by four players in double-figures, including Soufiyane Diakite's fourth consecutive double-double, Bethune-Cookman University downed Volusia County rival Stetson University, 74-62, Monday at the Edmunds Center.
In the process, BCU (10-9) matched last season's win total and won its fifth straight under first year Head Coach Ryan Ridder.Â
Soufiyane Diakite Named Defensive Player of the Week ... Again
Savannah State's Alante Fenner has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Howard's R.J. Cole was named Rookie of the Week while Hampton's Malique Trent-Street and Bethune-Cookman's Soufiyane Diakite were selected as Co-Defensive Players of the Week. It was the second consecutive honor for Diakite, who was the top rebounder in the MEAC over the past two games as he averaged 15.5 boards in a pair of wins over rivals Florida A&M and Stetson. The 6-6 forward from Bronx, NY grabbed 16 rebounds with a block against FAMU while finishing with 15 rebounds at Stetson.Â
Diakite's Rise to Dominance
If forward Soufiyane Diakite scored one more point vs. South Carolina State on Jan. 3, he would own six-straight double-doubles. He currently has four in-a-row, and leads the conference with 170 rebounds and his average 3 offensive boards per-night. He ranks seconds in the conference with 8.9 rebounds per-game, and during the five-game win streak, is averaging 13 rebounds and 15.4 points
