Wildcats Weather Winter Winds this Weekend

Washington, D.C. and Princess Anne, Md. - The Bethune Wildcats return to the road for a two-game stretch continuing MEAC play against Howard University (Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. at Trinity College) and UMES (Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m.). BCU looks to improve its 1-8 road mark this season, and win at each of the programs for the first time since 2012. Both games can be heard on WELE 1380 The Cat and www.1380thecat.com.

The Starting Five

1 Entering this week, BCU leads the MEAC in offensive rebounds (13.58), blocks (57), and free throw attempts (260). Amongst the NCAA, it is 19th in offensive boards, 32nd in blocks, and 31st in free throw attempts

2 A pair of Wildcats achieved double-doubles vs. SC State, with Malik Maitland dishing out 11 assists and scoring 15, while Shawntrez Davis led the 'Cats with 17 points and 12 rebounds. It was the second time this season the duo recorded the recognition (vs. Johnson 11/10)

3 BCU claimed its MEAC opener with a victory for only the third time since 2011-12. That year's squad started conference play 2-0, and was the last team to win its first two conference games

4 Senior guard Brandon Tabb ranks in the MEAC's top 5 in four three-point statistical categories- 3ptFGA, 3ptFGM, 3ptFG per-game, and 3ptFG %)

5 Tabb is fifth nationally and leads the MEAC at the charity stripe. He is converting 95.3% of his free throw attempts, and has only missed twice this season. His last miss was against Boston U on Dec. 8

Double-doubles by Shawntrez Davis and Malik Maitland charged a second half comeback to lead Bethune-Cookman University to an 86-80 triumph against South Carolina State Wednesday evening at Historic Moore Gymnasium. The win gave the Wildcats (6-9, 1-0) a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opening victory, and snapped a four-game losing skid.
 

Malik Maneuvers the Ball

Junior guard Malik Maitland enters the week as a MEAC leader in helper categories. He sits second with a 2.17 A/TO ratio, third with an average of 5.1 per-game and 76 total assists. On the defensive side, he ranks fifth with 25 total and 1.67 steals per-game

Soufiyane Strong on the road

Soufiyane Diakite's career-high 16 points came off another career-best with eight made field goals. He supplemented his 8-11 shooting with 11 boards. The Bronx, N.Y., native's .727 shooting percentage was also his highest on more than four field goals attempted. During the four-game road trip, the junior averaged 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds and 31 minutes played. When Diakite and the Wildcats returned home to host SC State, he nearly added another double-double with 10 boards, nine points, and three helpers in just 17 minutes
