BOSTON, Mass. – Four players scored in double-figures as Bethune-Cookman picked up a huge road victory, 74-66, against Boston University Friday night at "The Roof". The Wildcats snapped a five-game skid to improve to 5-9, while the Terriers fell to 7-6 in BCU's first road win of the campaign.
Malik Maitland and
Dondre Duffus each scored 14 points and the duo combined for 17 made free throws.
Shawntrez Davis netted 13 with a pair of treys, and
Houston Smith set a season-best with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 51% from the floor, including a 14-25 showing in the second half, and buried eight of 12 tree-pointers to avenge a close loss at home in 2017.
BCU led after intermission, 31-29, and went on a 10-0 run on a Davis dunk from a Maitland pass at 16:18. The Wildcats led by as much as 14, 55-41, when Duffus dropped a lay-in at 11:41.
Boston slowly mounted a comeback and cut the lead to a skinny point on Jack Hemphill's three at 6:37.
With a three-point lead and 2:33 to go, the BCU defense clinched its teeth and held the Terriers scoreless on three attempts in one possession. Multiple turnovers and points from Davis, Maitland, and Duffus sealed the game as BCU held a 70-60 lead with 49 seconds remaining.
The Wildcats made six of the last eight free-throw attempts and went 20-32 in the contest.
Maitland's five dimes led BCU's 12 as the Wildcats had a positive A/TO at 12 to 11, and took 15 BU turnovers into 18 points.
Max Mahoney led Boston with 17 points.
The hosts jumped out to a 9-5 lead on a Garrett Pascoe three at 14:25 before BCU battled back on a 6-2 run capped by
Wali Parks' dunk.
BCU took its first lead on Parks' jumped at 9:44 for a 15-14 advantage. The Wildcats led by as much as eight when Maitland drilled a pair of free throws with 3:22 to go.
The Wildcats went scoreless the remainder of the half and Mahoney floated at the buzzer to cut the Wildcat lead to 31-29 at the break.
BCU is off for the Christmas holiday and next plays on Jan. 5 at North Carolina Central to begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.
