Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gordon scores 16 in heartbreaking setback

Wildcats total 28 bench points in narrow road loss

SAN JOSE, Calif. – 28 bench points, including 16 from Mark Gordon, led Bethune-Cookman in a see-saw affair that saw San Jose State edge BCU, 76-65, Thursday at the San Jose State Events Center. Leon Redd had 13 and Malik Maitland poured in 10 for the Wildcats, who dropped to 4-6, while the Spartans moved to 2-6.

The Wildcats went for the win at the end as Wali Parks' three was off to the left as the buzzer expired.

In a game that featured eight ties and 18 lead changes, BCU's last lead came at the 1:05 mark on a Cletrell Pope lay-in off the inbounds from Redd, 65-64. Michael Steadman's lay-up with 43 seconds remaining gave the hosts the lead, and Pope fouled out after the next BCU possession after Steadman's defensive rebound. He finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

The largest lead of the latter half was BCU's four-point edge when Maitland hit a three at 5:26. His trey was one of seven made in the second half, led by Gordon's trio of makes to lead his 11 second half points. In total, the Wildcats sank 11 of 32 threes.

The Spartans took the early lead, with a 6-0 run to start the game and a 10-3 lead at 16:09 before the Wildcats went on a 13-2 run to take a 16-12 lead at 11:41 with a Gordon free throw.

With 4:59 to go in the first half, SJSU took a 27-23 lead on a Christian Anigwe free throw before the Wildcat defense clamped down. SJSU was held without a field goal for over five and a half minutes until a Zach Chappell lay-in with four seconds remaining. In the spurt, Redd scored eight-straight and BCU went into the break with a 35-32 lead.

BCU finishes its West Coast swing with a 10 p.m. Eastern tip against Cal Poly on Dec. 8.
