Wildcats Fall Short Against Missouri

BCU held to one hit against the Tigers

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Bethune-Cookman Softball was held to just a single hit Saturday evening as the Wildcats fell short against the Missouri Tigers, 8-0 at Big League Dreams Softball Complex as part of the 2018 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California.

Bethune-Cookman (5-9) was unable to get the bats going as the Wildcats were looking for their first win in this year's annual west coast competition featuring some of the best teams from around the country.

With Missouri (10-6) already leading 1-0 heading into the home-half of the second inning, the Tigers would strike for six more runs in the frame to increase the lead to an insurmountable advantage.

At the top of the order, right fielder Cayla Kessinger sent a two-run shot over the center field wall for her third home run of the year. Amanda Sanchez delivered a RBI single. And it was catcher Trenity Edwards delivering an RBI single of her own later in the inning.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the third to put the run-rule into play.

Bethune-Cookman would touch Mizzou starter Nalani Scates just one time in the contest, that coming in the top of the very first inning when catcher Kailey Richard pushed out a single to center.

In picking up the win in the circle, Scates upped her record at 2-0 for the year as she pitched four innings with a hit allowed, two walks and two strikeouts. The fifth inning was worked by Danielle Baumgartner out of the bullpen, as she struck out one batter and did not allow a hit.

The loss went to BCU starter Destiny Enriquez (1-4) as the Norwalk, California sophomore went just one inning on the rubber, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks. It was freshman Victoria Guzman finishing out the final three innings for the Wildcats, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits, one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Bethune-Cookman will play its final game of this year's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic later Saturday evening when the Wildcats take on the San Diego State Aztecs back at the Big League Dreams Softball Complex.
