Lorenzo, Maldonado Garner MEAC Weekly Awards

BCU earns awards after series win over Milwaukee

NORFOLK, Va. – Bethune-Cookman Baseball earned a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) weekly awards on Monday after a series win over Milwaukee from the weekend. Giovany Lorenzo was tabbed MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week, while Anthony Maldonado earned MEAC Pitcher of the Week accolades.
 
Lorenzo, a 5-9, freshman from Ft. Myers, Florida, is earning his first collegiate MEAC weekly award. The Wildcats catcher batted at a .333 clip on the week with seven hits and two doubles. He picked up 29 putouts and four assists from his catcher position, while also scoring twice at the dish. In the first game of a series with Milwaukee, Lorenzo batted 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a sacrifice fly and being hit by a pitch on the night. He also registered eight putouts and an assist in the Wildcats win.
 
Maldonado, a 6-4, 190-pound sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida earns his first weekly award by the league after being named the MEAC Preseason pitcher of the Year. The tall, hard-throwing right-hander picked up his first win of the season as he helped Bethune-Cookman secure the series win against Milwaukee in the second game of a three-game home series for the Wildcats. Maldonado went 5.1 innings on the bump, scattering two hits and no runs allowed while posting a game-high eight strikeouts against zero (0) walks on the afternoon.
 
This week's MEAC Player of the Week was North Carolina Central's Corey Joyce who went 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate as North Carolina Central won two out of three against Wagner, driving in seven runs and scoring three times. He was 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs in the series opener, before going 3-for-5 with two doubles in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
 
The Pitcher of the Week was Trevor McKenna of Savannah State that threw six no-hit innings in a season-opening 2-0 win over Delaware State, striking out seven Hornets and walking just one.
 
Bethune-Cookman Baseball returns to action Tuesday with a home game against in-state opponent UCF, followed by a Wednesday game against USF. Both games are to take place at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with a 6 p.m. start time.
