ORLANDO, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman was limited to just one hit on Tuesday evening as the visiting Wildcats fell to UCF in non-conference softball action by a count of 8-0 in five innings at the UCF Softball Complex.
UCF (22-12) was able to open the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
An RBI single from catcher Cassady Brewer scored one. Courtney Rotton stole home, aided by a fielding error charged to BCU's
Kailey Richard at second base. And it was another RBI single by the Knights, this one from first baseman Brooke Barlow to plate Brewer for the 3-0 advantage.
Bethune-Cookman (16-20) got its lone hit of the game in the top of the second inning, using a leadoff single from Richard to right field to get the frame going.
However, the Wildcats would be limited to just three base runners the rest of the way, including a walk drawn by
Brianna Sanders in the fourth.
The Knights would plate four runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the run-rule into play.
Two walks with the bases loaded accounted for a pair of runs, while Denalo Schappacher supplied a RBI double to plate another run.
The win went to UCF starter Kamryn Toney (3-3) as she went three innings in the circle, allowing one hit and collecting a strikeout. The loss went to
Alexis Bermudez (6-8) as she tossed 3.1 innings, being hit eight times, allowing six runs (four earned) and amassing a strikeout.
Bethune-Cookman gets back to action this weekend as the Wildcats travel to North Carolina A&T for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series beginning with a doubleheader Friday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
