Wildcats pick up weekly accolades following series sweep

April 09, 2018

NORFOLK, Va. – Bethune-Cookman student-athletes Joseph Fernando and Anthony Maldonado each picked up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) weekly awards announced Monday afternoon from the league office in Norfolk, Virginia. Fernando was selected MEAC Co-Player of the Week, while Maldonado was tabbed Pitcher of the Week.

Fernando shares this week's honor alongside North Carolina A&T senior Milton Rivera.

Joseph Fernando, a 6-0, 185-pound junior from Brooklyn, New York, was 7-for-14 (.500) at the plate in four games this past week, leading the Wildcats to a 3-1 record and a sweep of Savannah State. He opened that series with a 3-for-5 game, hitting a triple and driving in a run – before adding two more RBIs and another triple in the second game of the doubleheader. In the finale against the Tigers, Fernando went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs and hitting a double.

Maldonado, a 6-4, 190-pound sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida tossed a complete-game shutout in the second game of the Wildcats' doubleheader against Savannah State. In the seven-inning contest, the MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year struck out five and scattered three hits. This is his second weekly award of the 2018 season for Maldonado.

This week's MEAC Player of the Week was North Carolina Central's Corey Joyce who went 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate as North Carolina Central won two out of three against Wagner, driving in seven runs and scoring three times. He was 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs in the series opener, before going 3-for-5 with two doubles in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Bethune-Cookman gets back to the diamond Tuesday, April 10, when the Wildcats travel to North Florida for a midweek non-conference matchup with the Ospreys at 6:05 p.m.
