GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman's return to the NCAA Regionals saw the Wildcats fall 8-0 to second-seeded Florida Friday night before a near-capacity crowd of 1,950 at Katie Seashole Pressley Stadium.
Kelly Barnhill, the 2017 National Player Of The Year, and Aleshia Ocasio combined on 14-strikeout no-hitter and pinch hitter Jaimie Hoover drove in five runs -- all with two outs -- as the Gators (51-8) advanced to play Ohio State, a 3-1 winner over USF, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m..
Bethune-Cookman (31-25) saw its seven-game losing streak snapped and now faces USF in an elimination game Saturday at 5 p.m. The winner faces the Ohio State - Florida loser immediately afterwards.
Ryan Jackson was the lone Wildcat baserunner, drawing a first-inning walk and stealing second.
Hoover was brought in as a pinch hitter in the second, and delivered with a three-run homer. The next inning, she had a two-run single as the Gators chased
Alexis Bermudez, who dropped to 13-10.
Victoria Guzman worked two innings of relief before giving up a two-run homer to Nicole DeWitt in the sixth that ended the game.
The bright spot for Bethune-Cookman was its defense, which got two double plays triggered by second baseman
Kayla Traylor in the first and fifth, four outfield catches from Jackson in center and a
Bryanna Campos snag that saved a run.
This was Bethune-Cookman's first regional appearance since 2012.
