DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A shorthanded Bethune-Cookman squad took four of five singles matches to stun Stetson 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at City Island Tennis Center.
Juan Navarro's 6-4,4-6,6-2 victory over Collin MacNamara at No. 5 singles lifted the Wildcats, who fielded just five players, to their first victory in 2019.
Stetson (1-2) was ahead 2-0 thanks to needing just one win to take the doubles point and a forfeit at No. 6 singles, then went ahead 3-1 with Clint Hamel's win at No. 2 singles.
Phillip Lynch and
Jose Plazas tied the match with victories at No. 3 and No. 4, setting the stage for Navarro.
"That was an epic come from behind win for these athletes, said BCU coach
Val Villucci. "They showed maturity and resiliency, which I'm confident is going to continue to help us throughout this season. It was a proud moment for us to beat a quality and talented team such as Stetson."
Victor Bravo won his match at No. 1 singles to improve to 2-0 on the season.
BCU hosts Charleston Friday.
