DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Before Bethune-Cookman's Tuesday baseball game against FIU, BCU Athletics surprised former student-athlete and Head Coach Mervyl Melendez with a pregame ceremony to celebrate his recent 600th career win, and induct him as the first member of the BCU Ring of Honor.

As a member of the Ring of Honor, only the jerseys of the elite Wildcats who have excelled as players, coaches, and ambassadors of BCU will reside there.

A 2016 inductee into the BCU Hall of Fame, Melendez was named an assistant coach at BCU under Richard Skeel, where he won two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles, and became the Head Coach three years later. During the next 11 seasons, he was named MEAC Coach of the Year eight times, including six straight, and led the 'Cats to 11 MEAC Tournament Championships and NCAA regional championship appearances, three undefeated seasons in league play, and 379 career wins.

Melendez was a two-year letterwinner in 1995-96 and finished his playing career as the Wildcats' all-time leader in doubles with 30 and batting average at .342. He also starred as a relief pitcher for the 'Cats in addition to his regular role at third base.

Prior to the ceremony, Melendez sat down with current BCU Head Coach Jonathan Hernandez to join Voice of the Wildcats Nolan Alexander for a #CatCast to discuss their history, why Melendez still cares about BCU, Latin-American coaches in college baseball, and a unique championship memory.
