NORFOLK, Va. – Victor Bravo and Bethune-Cookman went down fighting Friday at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tennis semifinals.
That felt good. The 4-1 loss to South Carolina State? Umm, nah.
A spirited Wildcat 2019 run ended with a loss to the Bulldogs, who will face Morgan State in Saturday's championship. BCU finishes 7-10 with three more overall victories and more tournament win than last year.
"We gave a great fight," said Bravo, one of three seniors on the team. "It has been an amazing season and I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to be here and be a part of this."
South Carolina State (10-12) used its big serving to take the doubles point, but BCU stayed competitive – three matches were in the third set.
Bravo registered the lone BCU point at No. 1 while
Victor Castro fell in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 Â Â that was the decider.
"We had a chance in singles, and played well in singles, but things just didn't go our way," said BCU Head Coach
Val Villucci. "We kept improving all season and we used all the obstacles we had as a motivator to play harder for each other."
Bravo, just 2-11 last season, finished with a 9-5 singles mark this year.
"What a difference," Villucci said of Bravo. "He won some big matches for us this season and took his game up a level."
NOTES: Bravo and Castro finish the season with nine wins each, followed by Plazas and
Juan Navarro each with eight … Bravo won all three of his MEAC tournament appearances.
