Seven Things To Know About @BCUsoftball In The MEAC Tournament

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Seven things to know about Bethune-Cookman hosting the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball tournament beginning Wednesday at 12 noon when the Wildcats meet Coppin State.
 
1)            Bethune-Cookman's the defending champion and will by vying for its 10th tournament championship and 11th NCAA tournament appearance (BCU earned an at-large bid to the NCAA during the famed 2005 Super Regional run) by winning the double-elimination affair. BCU last repeated when it ran off three straight titles from 2010-2012.

2)            The Wildcats are 42-15 in the MEAC tournament under Head Coach Laura Watten, who will be vying for her seventh MEAC title this weekend.

3)            The BCU-Florida A&M rivalry is a big part of the softball tournament. The teams have met on Championship Saturday the past five years and eight times overall. BCU is 15-16 overall against the Rattlers in the tournament, but 10-9 under Watten.

4)            Sophomore Alexis Bermudez earned Most Outstanding Performer in last year's tournament for her four games inside the circle. She finished with a 1.63 ERA with 16 strikeouts. Kayla Traylor earned a berth on the All-Tournament team, batting .417. Cheyenne Smith scored the game-winning run in the 3-2 victory over Savannah State and had an RBI in the tournament opener vs. Coppin State.

5)            Traylor enters the tournament after posting .700 average (7-10) in the season finale series vs. Florida A&M. She finished as the team's top hitter during league play at .421, ahead of Kaiya Epps-Lee (.381), Brianna Paysinger (.372) and Smith (.342).

6)            LOGISTICS: If BCU wins Wednesday, it'll play the Howard-North Carolina Central winner Thursday at 3 p.m. A loss will put them against that game's loser at noon Thursday. Saturday's championship game is slated for 12 noon, with the "if necessary" game for 3 p.m.
