Sixty-eight years later, that touchdown catch against Florida A&M still shines as one of Cy McClairen's shining moments, if not THE shining moment of his Bethune-Cookman legacy.
But McClairen, of course, delivered many great moments for the Wildcat nation. Somehow, we got it down to ten more.
1)     1953 SIAC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – McClairen dropped a game-high 26 points to lead the Wildcats to a 72-61 victory over Xavier to give Bethune-Cookman a sweep of the football and basketball titles. Xavier was one of only two teams to beat the Wildcats during the regular season.
2)     1951 SIAC TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP – McClairen's first conference championship actually happened the year before when he took the discus title with a heave of 151 feet. In all, McClairen finished with 12 varsity letters as a Bethune-Cookman student-athlete.
3)     1980 SIAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT – This goes as perhaps his finest coaching moment when he took a team that went 10-14 overall and 3-7 in conference play during the regular season to the tournament title. Bethune-Cookman dominated a Morehouse team it lost to twice in the regular season with an 84-67 decision, downed the regular season champion Tuskegee in double overtime and then won the trophy with a 76-70 win over Benedict behind 27 points from Anthony Chester.
4)Â Â Â Â Â 1961 FOOTBALL VS. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE:Â McClairen's debut as Wildcat Head Coach was September 23, 1961 at South Carolina State, where he got two touchdowns from King Davis in a 19-18 victory. It would start a run of 11 consecutive winning seasons on the gridiron.
5)Â Â Â Â Â 1961 BASKETBALL AT FT. VALLEY STATE:Â Just as significant was McClairen's 75-60 win at Ft. Valley State on December 4, 1961 in his basketball coaching debut. Bethune-Cookman finished that year 14-13, and McClairen would post 16 consecutive winning seasons.
6)Â Â Â Â Â 1994 FOOTBALL FLORIDA CLASSIC VS. FLORIDA A&M:Â McClairen couldn't get the Rattlers during his first tenure as Head Football Coach, but when he was brought in to stabilize the program in 1994, he finished his season with a thrilling 27-24 win in Tampa that gave him a three-game winning streak and probably got him voted as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach Of The Year.
7)Â Â Â Â Â Â THE ENTIRE 1968 BASKETBALL SEASON:Â Bethune-Cookman's best season of basketball was in 1968 when the team finished 24-7, averaged 101 points a game (without a shot clock or 3-point line) and defeated Florida A&M 104-101 in the SIAC championship game. The season ended with the program's second NCAA Division II tournament appearance.
8)Â Â Â Â Â 1953 BASKETBALL VS. KNOXVILLE:Â McClairen poured in a career-high 31 as the Wildcats set what was then a single-game scoring record as they downed Knoxville 121-103.
9)Â Â Â Â Â 1968 FOOTBALL VS. FLORIDA A&M:Â The Wildcats lost this game 23-20, but McClairen celebrates this as the best game his team had against a Jake Gaither coached Rattler squad.
10)Â Â 1951 FOOTBALL VS. BENEDICT:Â McClairen had 113 of Raymon Thornton's 180 yards, scored one touchdown and set up another as the Wildcats downed Benedict 31-15.
