DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Gerhard Sullwald won his second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of The Week Award Wednesday morning than helped Bethune-Cookman and first-year Head Coach
George Henry win their first match of the season.
The freshman delivered the deciding fourth point as the Wildcats pulled off a 4-3 upset over Keiser University, ranked seventh in the nation in NAIA, at City Island Tennis Center.
Sullwald remained undefeated on the season in both doubles and singles, with his 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision over Geronimo Barris at No. 2 singles putting Henry and the Wildcats in the win column at 1-3.
"Gerhard played another clutch day of matches," Henry said. "He didn't play his best tennis today in singles, but he made the necessary adjustments that needed to be made to seal the win."
Coming off a tough 4-3 loss to College of Charleston over the weekend, Henry had a good feeling about Wednesday and also gave credit to former Lady Wildcat Stacey Speller, an All-MEAC performer, for an inspirational pep talk prior to the match.
"The team really played with heart and passion today," Henry said.  "The guys seemed to be playing more for the team and school than for themselves.  I was very impressed with the way the whole team competed today, I knew the team was ready for a fight today by the way they started the match by winning the doubles point."
The freshman duo of
Joaquin Bianchi and
Nicolas Rodriguez gave the Wildcats the doubles points with their win at No. 3. Rodriguez later put BCU ahead 3-2 with his No. 4 singles win.
"Nicolas played clinch and high percentage tennis today," Henry said of Rodriguez. "He was able to clinch the doubles point and was also able to carry his consistency to win a three-set thriller."

Joshua Cadiz-Ramcharitar's first win of the season at No. 5 was the other BCU point.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday morning, hosting Georgia Southern.
