As promised, here's the game side of our Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference departure series.
Since it's hard to take 40 years and trim it down to 15 paragraphs, I've brought in some help. You can help, too, by dropping me a quick note at the bottom and I'll include your remarks as time goes on.
One thing: we avoided listing a Florida A&M win if all possible. That's an entire sub-genre around here and we all know that.
Baseball – (Dan Ryan) 2011 MEAC tournament. This is an inside joke – Flip-flopped from a softball regional in Gainesville and covered an 8-0 MEAC tournament semifinal over Norfolk State at Jackie Robinson that allowed me to get to my daughter's HS graduation with plenty of time to spare.
Former Head Coach Mervyl Melendez: "My most memorable moment while at B-CU was during the MEAC when I got ejected in the semifinal game against North Carolina A&T and had to serve a one-game suspension. After we won the championship game, the entire team ran to the locker room area to celebrate with me. A very special moment."
Former Head Coach Jason Beverlin: "Watching our players play so fast and loose at the Gainesville regional in 2017. It's something you talk about as a coach but to see everyone do it at the same time was magical."
Men's Basketball -- 2012 MEAC quarterfinal vs. NC Central. Stanley Elliott takes the charge and Garrius Holloman hits the jumper with 4.9 seconds left for a 60-59 victory. Two days later, the Cats are in the "ship" against Norfolk State.
Former Head Coach Clifford Reed: 2011 at Hampton double OT win where Holloman grabs an offensive rebound and sends out to CJ Reed for a buzzer beater to force second OT, which sees CJ Reed hit another buzzer beater for the game winner. The victory was key to B-CU winning its only MEAC regular season title.
Football – There are NINE CONSECUTIVE other games I could think of, but I'm going to go with a 1997 win over North Carolina A&T in Coach Alvin B. Wyatt Sr.'s first season one year after the Aggies dropped 73 on the 'Cats.
Head Coach Terry Sims: "2015 against North Carolina Central. That game went back and forth and we won when Elliott Miller blocked a field goal on the game's final play."
Former Head Coach Alvin B. Wyatt Sr.: "Being enshrined in the MEAC Hall of Fame (2019) knowing that I'm alongside my players in both football and women's basketball and some great challengers from my coaching days."
Golf – 2011 National Minority Golf Championship (Now PGA Works). Young team loses their senior star, but goes out and wins the men's title anyway.
Track/XC – 2018 4X400 slashes the school record by five seconds, but still finishes second to NC A&T and goes over to shake hands in a great show of sportsmanship. Two weeks later, they finish ahead of the Aggies at the NCAA East Preliminary for a berth in the NCAA championships.
Head Coach Donald Cooper: "In his second year (2010), watching Kemar Clarke advance through the rounds of the 110h at the NCAA East Regional Outdoor championships in Bloomington Indiana and becoming his first B-CU national qualifier."
Tennis – MEAC tournament semifinal 2015 – a 4-2 victory over NC Central that sent the Wildcats to their first-ever championship match, which, alas, did not get played due to rain.
Women
Basketball -- 2018 vs. Coppin State. Chandler McCabe's first turn as a head comes with Vanessa Blair-Lewis on maternity leave in a game that had trap written all over it. Lady Cats got their 20
th win, stayed atop the MEAC and were treated to a screening of
Black Panther afterwards.
Former Head Coach/Senior Associate AD Sandra Booker: I've enjoyed going to the MEAC tournament every year with my daughter Mya from when she was an infant all the way to her teenage years and having her treated like family every time.
Former Head Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis: "Of course, the 2019 MEAC tournament championship game when we beat Norfolk State for our first NCAA tournament appearance. That team overcame the loss of two starters and had six total knee surgeries. I'll remember Angel Golden putting the team on her back and delivering the pre-game talk as well as having both my children there, especially since I missed the tournament the year before."
Faculty Athletics Representative Carla Lester: "The 2019 MEAC women's basketball tournament. We had been so close the two years before including my last year serving as MEAC president. The joy and excitement of the team was overwhelming and the opportunity to cut a piece of the tournament net was a cool bonus. That was also my last full tournament experience since 2020 and 2021 were affected by the pandemic."
Bowling-
Former Head Coach Robert "Tony" O'Neal: "2011 MEAC tournament when we beat eventual national champion Maryland-Eastern Shore twice to advance to the championship match televised on ESPN. And we did it with four freshmen."
Golf- Yudika Rodriguez went out with a flourish at the 2019 PGA Works Collegiate Championship.
In her final event as a Lady Wildcat, Rodriguez posted her career 54-hole low with a 69-67-72-208 (eight under par) as the women won a record eighth straight -- and 16th overall -- women's Division I crown in the event formerly known as the National Minority Golf Championship
Softball – Tie between Shanel Tolbert's no-hitter against SCSU in 2014 (first no-no I ever scored) and Michelle Banelous-Smith's RBI single in the 8
th against Delaware State for the 2012 conference title.
Head Coach Laura Watten: "The 2005 Gainesville Regional and Super Regional at Texas were amazing, but beating Florida 5-0 at Sunnyland Park that year will always be one of my favorites."
Tennis – The 2015 championship was amazing, but I'm actually going with a LOSS – the 2017 team was down 3-0 in the semis to Hampton, literally left it all on the court while battling for a 3-3 tie before Hampton won 4-3. Nobility in defeat.
Track/XC: Asia Joe had the most interesting finish of the day in the 2016 400 meter as she and her North Carolina A&T rival both stumbled at the finish line, but Joe was able to get her hand across for the victory.
Head Coach Donald Cooper: "Taking a picture with Deidra Jordan, [Former FAMU Head Coach] Darlene Moore and my daughter Kaysey Cooper) at MEAC Outdoor Championships. Deidra Jordan won the Women's MEAC Outdoor Championships Most Outstanding Performer, Coach Moore won the Women's Team Title and Coach of the Year and I won the Men's Team Title and Coach of the year. We all graduated from Swainsboro High School in Swainsboro, Ga.
Volleyball –
Head Coach Brittany Williams: "Winning B-CU's first ever regular season Southern division championship in 2015 and going undefeated in conference play. To see where that group of players started from when I first stepped on campus as an assistant and all the trials and ups and downs we faced to finally see all of their hard work pay off and for it to happen in my first season as HC will forever hold a special place in my heart."
Me: I'm going with the 2014 FAMU win that marked the program's first-ever victory over the Rattlers in 50 tries. Yeah, that's me breaking the rule on the last paragraph. What did you expect?
