Wildcats Embark on First SWAC Road Trip of 2022

Daytona Beach, FL – The Wildcats head on the road for a pair of conference games this weekend. B-CU opens the weekend at Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m., followed by a trip to the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Monday, Jan. 17 at 8:30 pm.

The Wildcats will look to snap a three-game losing streak this weekend. Most recently, the Wildcats fell to Southern University, 69-59 on Monday, Jan. 10. The Wildcats led the Jaguars by a basket at halftime, but shot only 26 percent from the field after the break. Marcus Garrett led the Wildcats with 16 points in the loss.
 
Scouting the Delta Devils
 
Mississippi Valley State is 1-13 this season, including a 1-3 start to conference play. MVSU had lost 12 straight before defeating Prairie View A&M, 84-82 last week. The Delta Devils then took a 95-58 loss at Texas Southern on Monday, Jan. 10
 
MVSU averages 63.9 points per game and allows an average of 88.5 points per game – the most points allowed per game in the SWAC. The Delta Devils are shooting 35 percent from the field, and 28 percent from behind the arc.
 
Robert Carpenter leads the Delta Devils on the offensive end. He is the SWAC's second-leading scorer, averaging 17.8 points per game, as well as 4.8 rebounds per game.
 
Scouting the Lions
 
UAPB is 3-14 this season with a 1-3 start in SWAC play. The Lions endured a difficult non-conference schedule including games at #4 Baylor and #17 Texas. The Lions enter this weekend on a two-game losing skid with a game vs. Florida A&M scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15.
 
The Lions average 63.2 points pet game and allow an average of 79.2 points per game. They are shooting 38 percent from the field and 28 percent from distance.
 
Shawn Williams sits fifth in the SWAC with an average of 14.7 points per game. Of all qualified players, he ranks second in three point percentage, shooting 34 percent on 138 attempts.  Brandon Brown is the SWAC's second-leading rebounder, grabbing 8.1 boards per game.
 
Notes
  • Four Wildcats are averaging double-digits in scoring since December 15. Joe French leads with 13.25 ppg in four games played, followed by Kevin Davis with 12, Marcus Garrett with 10.8, and Collins Joseph with 10 over their last six games played.
  • At least one Wildcat has scored over 15 points in five straight games, highlighted by a 31-point showing from French and a 26-point effort from Davis. Four of the top 20 scoring performances in the SWAC this season belong to either Joe French or Kevin Davis
  • The Wildcats are winless this season when opponents shoot better than 45% from the field. All three Wildcats victories came when the Wildcats finished the game with more steals than their opponent.
All-Time Series
 
Saturday's game will be the fifth meeting between the Delta Devils and the Wildcats. B-CU leads the all-time series, 3-1, and has the last three meetings. The two teams have not met since the 80s, when the Wildcats most recently defeated the Delta Devils, 69-68 on December 15, 1982.
 
Monday's meeting will be the first ever between B-CU and Arkansas – Pine Bluff.
