Itta Bena, MS – In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Wildcats snapped their three-game losing skid and secured their first road victory of the season at Mississippi Valley State, Saturday night in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
How It Happened
The Wildcats (4-12, 2-2 SWAC) jumped on Mississippi Valley State (1-14, 1-4 SWAC) quickly to the tune of a 10-3 lead after a quick six points from
Kevin Davis.
The Delta Devils calmed things down, and with five minutes left in the half, the game was tied at 18 each. The Wildcats entered halftime down 33-31.
In a back-and-forth second half, neither team led by more than four points until the 17
th minute of play. With 1:44 to play, a jumper from
Joe French put the Wildcats up 62-54 – that would be the Wildcats' final basket of the game.
Some missed free throws and a turnover opened the door for the Delta Devils, who cut the lead down to 62-60 with 12 seconds remaining.
Joe French was called for an offensive foul, giving MVSU the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead with ten seconds remaining, but Devin Gordon could not convert a three-pointer.
That was not all for the Delta Devils, who forced a turnover from
Kevin Davis in the dying seconds, but a last-second shot was not in the cards, and the Wildcats held on, 62-60.
Game Notes
- Three Wildcats scored in double figures – Davis led with 19, French followed with 18, and Dylan Robertson added 10.
