Recap

The Wildcats split last week's homestand, taking down Jackson State, 55-50 behind 18 points from Kevin Davis, followed by a 70-67 loss to Alcorn State despite a late comeback attempt. Through their first seven games in conference play, the Wildcats sit at 3-4. The Wildcats have performed well at Moore Gymnasium – the Wildcats have a 3-3 record at home, with two of the three loses coming by only one score.

Scouting the Hornets

Alabama State is 4-15 this season with a 3-4 conference record. The Hornets are losers of back-to-back games, including a one-score loss at Prairie View A&M and a 66-73 loss at Texas Southern.

Scoring 66 points per game and allowing 75.7 points per game, Alabama States sits fourth in the SWAC in both most points scored and most points allowed per game this season. The Hornets are shooting 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from deep. They are the most turnover-prone team in the SWAC, averaging over 16 per game.

Trace Young leads the Hornets with 11.1 points per game, while Gerald Liddell follows closely behind at 10.6 points per game. Jordan O'Neal leads his team on the boards averaging just over five per game.

Scouting the Bulldogs

Alabama A&M is 4-13 this season with a 3-4 record in SWAC play. The Bulldogs have lost three straight games, all on the road. Most recently, the Bulldogs fell 78-44 to Texas Southern and 72-48 to Prairie View A&M last weekend.

Alabama A&M averages the fewest points per game in the conference at 57.4. They allow the fourth-fewest points per game at 69.1. The Bulldogs are shooting 38 percent and 26 percent from behind the arc – both the lowest marks in the SWAC.

Jalen Johnson averages the fourth-most points per game in the conference at 14.6. He is also the SWAC's fifth-best rebounder, averaging 6.8 per game. He is shooting 45 percent from the field this season. Cameron Tucker leads his team with 3.7 assists per game.

Notes
  • The Wildcats have fielded at least three players in double-digits for scoring in six of their last seven games. At least one Wildcat has scored over 15 points in nine straight games
  • Since January 3, Kevin Davis is averaging over 15 points per game. He has not scored fewer than ten points in any game in that stretch. He is shooting 45% from the field during the stretch, including 40% from behind the arc. He is averaging over eight rebounds per game. Those numbers would put Davis in the SWAC's top five in scoring, rebounding, and shooting percentage if he met the minutes qualification.
  • The Wildcats continue to boast the second-fewest turnovers per game in the SWAC thus far this season, turning the ball over only 13.3 times per game.
  • The Wildcats came up with 16 takeaways in last weekend's game against Jackson State - the fifth-highest single game mark in the SWAC this season, and the second highest in conference matchups. Only one Wildcat did not finish with a steal in the game. Damani McEntire, sitting at second in the SWAC in steals, finished with four.

All-Time Series

Saturday's game will be the thirty-second meeting between Alabama State and B-CU. The two teams first met all the way back on Jan. 23, 1953, with the Wildcats taking that game, 92-72. The two programs have not faced off since Dec. 19, 1983, when B-CU fell to the Hornets, 96-65. The Hornets hold a 14-17 edge in the series

Monday will be the twenty-first meeting between Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats hold a 15-5 edge in the all-time series. B-CU won the first nine games in the series dating back to 1953, as well as their previous three meetings, most recently a 66-63 victory on Feb. 14, 1980.
