Recap
A Wildcat comeback was thwarted Saturday night as the Wildcats fell to Grambling State, 68-66.
Joe French dropped a new career-high 31 points, including nine straight in the last two minutes to pull the Wildcats even with just under twenty seconds in the game, but the Wildcats were heartbroken as a midrange jumper sunk their hopes in the dying seconds.
Scouting the Jaguars
Southern put together the best non-conference record of any SWAC team this season, finishing 6-7 with some closer-than-expected losses at Kentucky and Louisville. The Jaguars are 3-0 to start SWAC play including a forfeit.
The Jaguars downed last years SWAC Champions, Texas Southern, 63-55 to open conference play, and most recently defeated Florida A&M, 80-66 on Jan. 8.
The Jaguars rank near or at the top of the SWAC in points scored, field goal percentage, field goals per game, assist/turnover ratio, assists, and steals. Tyrone Lyons leads the Jaguars with 13.9 points per game. Brion Whitley leads the SWAC with a 43 percent three point percentage on 90 attempts.
Notes
- Bethune-Cookman has moved into third place in the SWAC in points allowed, allowing only 69.5 on average.
- The Wildcats have scored over 60 points in their previous three games – they had only reached that mark three times in their previous 11 contests
- Only three players in the SWAC have reached the 30-point mark twice this season – Joe French joined that club Saturday night.
- Marcus Garrett's eight assists Saturday night was the second-highest mark in a game by a SWAC player this season
All-Time Series
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Bethune-Cookman and Southern. The Wildcats are winless in the series thus far, though the two teams have not met since the 80s. Most "recently" the Wildcats were defeated by the Jaguars, 75-72 on Feb. 22, 1982.
