MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Bethune-Cookman swept Alabama State 3-0 and 8-0 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday that extended the Wildcats' winning streak to six and gave Head Coach
Laura Watten the B-CU school record for coaching victories.
Watten picked her 467th and 468th victories to move past the late and legendary Jack "Cy" McClairen, who had a combined 467 wins as football and men's basketball coach.
B-CU (20-23 overall, 14-6 SWAC) maintained its East Division lead over Jackson State and Florida A&M.
GAME 2
Halyne Gonzalez scattered four hits and struck out eight, and
Desirae Martinez drove in three runs to lead the Wildcats to the sweep.
B-CU jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead when
Joslynn Davis scored on
Briana Paysinger's fielder's choice and Martinez singled home
Haley Parks.
Martinez drove home two runs in the fifth on a two-out double and scored on a throwing error.
Essence Gibbs singled home
Kayla Traylor to conclude the scoring.
Shania Owens hit a two-run triple in the seventh to push B-CU's lead to 8-0.
Gonzalez didn't give up a walk or allow an Alabama State (17-26,9-11) runner to get past second base.
GAME 1
Hannah Ortega and Gonzalez combined on a three-hit shutout as the Wildcats took the first game.
Traylor had two of B-CU's four hits as the Wildcats capitalized on three Hornet errors.
Traylor gave B-CU a 1-0 lead in the third when Davis reached on an error.
Katelynn Perez scored on Owens' fifth inning sacrifice fly to make a 2-0.
Carrington Robinson scored on an error in the sixth.
The teams meet again Saturday afternoon.
