@BCUSoftball Sweeps ASU; Watten Breaks B-CU Coaching Victory Record

MONTGOMERY,  Ala. – Bethune-Cookman swept Alabama State 3-0 and 8-0 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday that extended the Wildcats' winning streak to six and gave Head Coach Laura Watten the B-CU school record for coaching victories.

Watten picked her 467th and 468th victories to move past the late and legendary Jack "Cy" McClairen, who had a combined 467 wins as football and men's basketball coach.

B-CU (20-23 overall, 14-6 SWAC) maintained its East Division lead over Jackson State and Florida A&M.

GAME 2

Halyne Gonzalez scattered four hits and struck out eight, and Desirae Martinez drove in three runs to lead the Wildcats to the sweep.

B-CU jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead when Joslynn Davis scored on Briana Paysinger's fielder's choice and Martinez singled home Haley Parks.

Martinez drove home two runs in the fifth on a two-out double and scored on a throwing error. Essence Gibbs singled home Kayla Traylor to conclude the scoring.

Shania Owens hit a two-run triple in the seventh to push B-CU's lead to 8-0.

Gonzalez didn't give up a walk or allow an Alabama State (17-26,9-11) runner to get past second base.

GAME 1

Hannah Ortega and Gonzalez combined on a three-hit shutout as the Wildcats took the first game.

Traylor had two of B-CU's four hits as the Wildcats capitalized on three Hornet errors.

Traylor gave B-CU a 1-0 lead in the third when Davis reached on an error.

Katelynn Perez scored on Owens' fifth inning sacrifice fly to make a 2-0.

Carrington Robinson scored on an error in the sixth.
