Gulfport, Miss. – A special softball season for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats came to an end Thursday afternoon at the hands of the Southern Jaguars.
How It Happened
The Wildcats opened the afternoon with a first-inning run in the second straight game.
Haley Parks opened the game with an infield single. She came around to score as
Briana Paysinger reached first on a high throw from the Southern shortstop.
Southern responded quickly in the top of the second with a two-out double and RBI single that tied things at 1-1.
The back-and-forth continued in the third as
Carrington Robinson legged out an infield single. She swiped second and came all the way around to score as the Southern centerfielder could not come up with the throw.
The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the fourth. Robinson slapped a ball over the infield and into left, driving in
Essence Gibbs to make it 3-1, B-CU.
The Jaguars clawed back into the game in the top of the sixth, opening the frame with a leadoff triple. An RBI single made it 3-2.
In the same inning, the Jaguars loaded the bases with one out and tied things up with a sacrifice fly. An RBI single on the next pitch made it 4-3. That would do it.
Hannah Ortega made the start. She took the loss after hurling 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with a walk and one strikeout.
Halyne Gonzalez took the final 1.1 innings. She allowed just one hit with a strikeout.
