Wildcats Return Home for SWAC Weekend Slate

Alabama State, Alabama A&M travel to Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball returns home this weekend looking to extend its home winning streak, as the Wildcats welcome the two Alabama schools from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to Richard V. Moore Gymnasium for a pair of league games beginning with Alabama State (Saturday, Jan. 28) and followed by Alabama A&M (Monday, Jan. 30).

SCOUTING ALABAMA STATE
Under the direction of Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson, Alabama State arrives to Daytona Beach with a SWAC record of 5-2, and an overall record of 8-10 on the campaign. The Hornets have won seven of their last nine games, including a pair last weekend at home against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern, respectively.
 
  • Shmya Ward leads the Hornets in scoring with an average of 16.4 points per game
  • Alabama State has 332 assists as a team – almost 50 more than their opponents
  • Jayla Crawford is the top outside shooter, connecting on 35.4 percent of her shots from three-point range
  • Ward is followed by Crawford (15.9) and Ayana Emmanuel (15.5) in the scoring column for the Hornets
 
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE HORNETS
Kayla Clark tied a career-high in registering 18 points and 19 rebounds in an overtime loss to the Alabama State Hornets, 83-69 in Memorial Gymnasium. After trading baskets to kick off the contest, BCU's Tania White three-point jumper sparked a 10-2 run cemented on a Kayla White fast-break layup to take an early 15-8 lead with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter. The Wildcats took the quarter leading the Hornets 19-15.
 
The second quarter was a back and forth affair when Alabama State went on an 8-0 run to capture the lead, 32-31 going into intermission. BCU's Tatum Harris kicked off the third quarter with a bang knocking down a long-range jumper to spark an 8-0 run, to recapture the lead 39-32 with 8:04 remaining in the quarter. The Wildcats held a 45-37 lead midway through the third quarter when the Hornets pieced together a 10-6 run to end the third quarter, cutting the Bethune-Cookman lead, 51-47. 
ASU carried the momentum into the fourth quarter shaving the lead 53-52 with 8:03 remaining in regulation. The Hornets took a 60-59 lead with 3:48 remaining. After a pair of free throws, the lead grew to a three-point advantage. BCU's Camary Harris layup trimmed Alabama State lead, 63-62. B-CU down by one with 28 seconds to go when Harris knocked down the tying free-throw to send the game into overtime.
 
It was all Hornets in overtime as they outscored the Wildcats 20-6 to escape with an 83-69 victory. Three Wildcats scored in double-figures led by Clark [18], Harris [11], and Kayla White [10]. Clark led the way on the boards with a game-high 19 rebounds. Alabama State Ayana Emmanuel led all scorers with a career-best 41-points returning home to Florida.
 
SCOUTING ALABAMA A&M
Alabama A&M travels to Florida A&M to begin its "Sunshine State" road trip on Saturday, Jan. 28, before arriving to Daytona Beach for Monday evening's contest. The Bulldogs arrive to Florida with a record of 8-9 overall, and a 6-1 league record tied atop the SWAC standings. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight games, with the only loss being a 63-35 setback to Jackson State in Mississippi.
 
  • Toni Grace (12.1 ppg) and Amani Free (11.5 ppg) lead the Bulldogs in scoring
  • Jayla Cody is the leading rebounder for the Bulldogs with an average of 5.8 per game
  • Taylor Smith shoots at a 29.6 percent clip from three-point range, while Free shoots at a 31.7 percent average
  • Alabama A&M leads the all-time series by a count of 3-2
 
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE BULLDOGS
Camary Harris scored 13 in Bethune-Cookman's 68-54 Southwestern Athletic Conference setback to Alabama A&M Saturday in Moore Gym. Nigeria Jones' 25 points led AAMU as the Bulldogs used a 16-0 run to pull away from a 14-14 second quarter tie for a 31-17 halftime lead. They led by as many 19 in the third quarter. Bethune-Cookman made it 55-50 on two Kayla White free throws with 2:56 remaining but could not pull any closer. Kayla Clark gave B-CU its only lead at 14-13 on a Kayla Clark three-point play with 7:58 remaining in the second quarter. Tania White was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 11.
 
UP NEXT
Bethune-Cookman travels to Texas next weekend, where the Wildcats face Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern, respectively. The Cats face Prairie View on Saturday, Feb. 4, followed by a trip to TSU in Houston on Monday, Feb. 6.
