Women’s Hoops to Host Iona Wednesday Evening

Cats host Gaels for home opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball team is set to participate in the 2023-24 home opener Wednesday when playing host to the Iona Gaels at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Head Coach Janell Crayton and the Wildcats traveled to Iona last year with the return trip for the visitors from New Rochelle, New York set for Wednesday evening.
 
BCU enters the contest having played the first two games of the season at UCF and Florida, respectfully.

When: Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, at 5:30 p.m.

NEWS & NOTES
▪ Bethune-Cookman comes into the home opener against Iona with a 1-1 record, falling away to UCF and Florida, respectfully.
Chanel Wilson was named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Impact Player of the Week for the period of November 14-20.
▪ Wilson leads the Cats with an average of 15.5 points per game, adding 2.5 rebounds per contest.
O'Mariyah Tucker has scored 24 points in two games, shooting 61.5 percent from the field – as well as 83.3 percent from three-point range.
Karianna Woods has supplied the BCU offense with a team second-most five assists thus far on the campaign. She has added 16 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
▪ BCU is 1-2 all-time at home in the month of November under Janell Crayton.
 
BCU VS. IONA SERIES
▪ Iona claimed the only previous meeting in the series between the two schools with the Gaels winning 60-57 on December 13, 2022, in New Rochelle, New York.
 
SCOUTING IONA
▪ Iona arrives to Daytona Beach with a record of 1-1 on the season, using a win over LIU in the Gaels last contest. They fell to Seton Hall in the season opener.
▪ For the Gaels, Petra Oborilova leads the squad with 24 points (12.0 per game), followed by Natalia Otkhmezuri with 21 points (10.5 per game).
▪ Ella Fajardo is tops on the team with 11 rebounds (5.5 per game).
▪ As a team, the Gaels are averaging 56 points per game, while shooting 43.8 percent from the field.
▪ From three-point range, the Gaels are shooting 44.7 percent with 17 of 38 from beyond the arc in two games.
 
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE GAELS
D'Shantae Edwards posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 steals in Bethune-Cookman's 60-57 loss at Iona in non-conference action in New Rochelle, New York.
 
Down by as many as 26, the Wildcats (0-8) cut the deficit to just one on Chale Wilson's three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left. Wilson led all scorers with 20 points, 10 steals for Edwards' steals puts her alone in second place for the single-game steal total in program history, just one shy of the record (11).
 
Nia Jordan added 10 for the Wildcats, who were 9-13 from the field in the fourth quarter. Juana Camilion led the Gaels with 16.
 
UP NEXT
The Wildcats travel to Atlanta for the Georgia State Classic hosted by GSU. The Cats will open play with the host Panthers (Nov. 22), followed by Bradley (Nov. 23).
