DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second time in as many games, Bethune-Cookman Men's Basketball topped the century mark in scoring as the Wildcats raced past visiting Trinity Baptist, 104-63 on Wednesday evening at Moore Gymnasium.
For the Wildcats, five different scorers reached double figures, including
Jakobi Heady with a game-high 25, including 5 of 9 from long range. The Wildcats have had at least five players in double figures scoring in consecutive games, as six players scored 10 or more points last week against Trinity College (Fla.).
With the win, Bethune-Cookman moves to 2-1 on the season, while Trinity Baptist falls to 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
▪ Bethune-Cookman raced out to an early 17-1 lead behind the shooting of
Zion Harmon and
Reggie Ward Jr.
▪ The Wildcats did not allow a Trinity Baptist field goal for almost the first seven minutes of the contest, and just two (2) field goals by the Eagles through the first 10 minutes, respectfully.
▪ An 11-2 first half run began with a
Dhashon Dyson three-pointer, pushing the Maroon and Gold out to a 28-point lead (45-17), before Trinity Baptist countered with the play of Zach Kiadi and Diego Fernandez to cut into the BCU advantage (48-31) with 1:43 remaining in the first half.
▪ A driving basket by Dyson that pushed the Wildcats lead to 52-31 would see BCU's lead never fall below 20 the rest of the way.
▪ Bethune-Cookman shot 51.1 percent from the floor in the first half, including 29.4 percent from three-point territory.
▪ In the second half, Heady scored 13 of his game-high 25 points on the strength of 5 for 7 from the floor (adding a trio of three-pointers in the process).
▪
Simeon Womack, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, poured in seven (7) second-half points.
▪ BCU continued its hot shooting in the second stanza, firing at a 45 percent clip from the field, and connecting on 7 of 19 from beyond the arc.
▪ Trinity Baptist was led in scoring by Kiadi with 22 points, followed by Fernandez with 17. Kiadi also added seven rebounds.
▪ Bethune-Cookman's five players reaching double figures scoring on the night were Heady (25), Harmon (21), Dyson (15),
Dondre Watson (15) and Ward Jr. (14).
NOTES & STATS
▪ Bethune-Cookman has now scored 100 points or more in consecutive games at home for the first time since 2019-20 when scoring 110 vs. Johnson (Fla.) and 100 vs. Trinity Baptist.
▪ The Wildcats have reached triple digits scoring against Trinity Baptist in three of the last four meetings between the two sides, respectively.
▪ The Cats outrebounded the Eagles by a 47-40 margin, leading to a 52-24 advantage for points in the paint.
▪ Trinity Baptist cut the BCU scoring advantage in the second half, as the Eagles scored 32 second half points as compared to BCU's 48.
▪ The Wildcats are now shooting 30.9 percent from beyond the three-point line on the campaign.
