Men's Basketball Can’t Overcome Jackson State

Wildcats drop 91-64 decision at home

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Marcus Garrett poured in 21 points for Bethune-Cookman on Monday evening, but it wasn't enough as visiting Jackson State walked away with a 91-64 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball victory over the Wildcats at Moore Gymnasium.

Jackson State (9-17, 8-5 SWAC) ran out to an early 11-2 lead behind the shooting of Coltie Young. The Tigers would never look back as the visitors from Jackson, Mississippi never trailed in the game.

The Tigers shot a blistering 64 percent from the field in the opening half, including 5-of-10 from three-point range.

Bethune-Cookman (9-17, 5-8 SWAC) dug deep as Marcus Garrett scored 12 points in the first half for the Wildcats. Joe French aided the Maroon and Gold with three (3) three-pointers as well.

But it would be Jackson State holding a 41-31 lead into the locker room at the half.

In the second half, JSU converted 20 fast break points and used 14 points off eight Bethune-Cookman turnovers to widen its lead.

After BCU's Zion Harmon drove the paint for a layup that cut the Cats deficit at 45-38 with 16:50 left in the second half, Jackson State turned to Chase Adams – who at one point was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field with three (3) three-pointers, to kick start a 21-8 run that was capped by an Evans jumper from the right wing to give the Tigers a 66-46 edge with 8:38 showing on the clock.

Jackson State's lead stretched to as much as 78-55 when Young pulled up for a three on a fast break – using the assist from Chase Adams, with under three minutes remaining.

The Tigers were paced by Adams' 21-point performance, as he finished 8-for-11 from the field. Ken Evans contributed 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Young turned in 15 points and five rebounds, as teammate Romelle Mansel collected 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

BCU was led by Garrett's 21 points and 10 rebounds, giving the redshirt senior from Chicago his third double-double of the campaign. French added 16 points, and Harmon finished just outside double-digits with nine points.

The Cats look to rebound Saturday, Feb. 18, as the Maroon and Gold travel to Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. CT.
