DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Kevin Davis supplied 17 points and
Dhashon Dyson added 15, as Bethune-Cookman fell to Grambling State 66-54 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball action taking place inside Richard V. Moore Gymnasium on Monday evening.
Â
With the teams tied at 24-24 heading into the locker room at the half, Grambling State (20-8, 13-3 SWAC) turned to the services of Carte'are Gordon in a variety of areas in the second half.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (11-19, 7-10) stepped ahead 26-24 on the back of a
Zion Harmon jumper moments into the final period. However, the visiting Tigers answered quickly with a 7-0 run – thanks in part to Gordon with five points during the scoring streak, to go ahead 31-26.
Â
The two teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, as Harmon and
Dhashon Dyson went toe-to-toe with GSU's combination of Gordon and Shawndarius Cowart. Each time the Tigers went up three, the Wildcats used a basket from either Dyson or Harmon to peg the Tigers back to just a one-point deficit.
Â
After back-to-back baskets by BCU's
Kevin Davis brought the Wildcats to within 42-41 with 10:42 remaining, Cowart converted a layup off a steal, followed by a three-pointer from Tra'Michael Moton, to give Grambling State a 49-43 lead with just under nine minutes left on the clock. The lead would widen to 52-43 with 6:46 remaining, as GSU's Cameron Christon took a pass from Moton and converted the layup and subsequent free throw for the three-point play.
Â
Dyson's layup with 4:48 left brought the homestanding Cats back to within 52-49, after the Chicago native scored six consecutive for the Maroon and Gold.
Â
But it would be GSU's Cowart scoring eight of the next 10 points for his side – mixed with a dunk from Gordon, to help keep his side tied atop the SWAC standings alongside Alcorn on the night.
Â
The GSU starters would score all 66 points for the Tigers, while BCU's bench outscored Grambling State 21-0 in that department.
Â
GSU received a game-high 22 points from Gordon in shooting 9-for-13 from the field, as he added eight rebounds to boot. Cowart poured in 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. Christon had 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. And it was Moron recording 11 points and three assists.
Â
BCU was led in scoring by Davis' 17-point effort, going on to collect a game-high nine rebounds. Dyson finished with 15 points and three assists for the Maroon and Gold.
Â
The Wildcats continue their pursuit of a spot in the upcoming SWAC Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, when the Wildcats host Florida A&M to Moore Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday, March 4, at 4 p.m. The game is also Senior Appreciation Day for the Wildcats.
