BCU Falls in Home Doubleheader to FAU

Guzman, Lopez see action pitching for the Cats

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball dropped both games of a midweek doubleheader against Florida Atlantic on Tuesday afternoon, as the Wildcats fell on scores of 7-0 and 6-0, respectively, at Sunnyland Park.
 
GAME ONE: FLORIDA ATLANTIC 7, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 0
Victoria Guzman went the distance in the pitcher's circle for Bethune-Cookman in what was the first game of a midweek doubleheader against Florida Atlantic, as the Wildcats were defeated by the visiting Owls 7-0 at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Florida.
 
Florida Atlantic (20-10) scored two runs in the top of the first with leadoff hitter Cammeo Presutti scoring on a wild pitch, followed later in the at-bat by Becca Jones' sacrifice fly to left that brought around Abby Ota for the score.
 
FAU made it 4-0 in the top of the second inning when Ota and Riley Ennis both scored on an error charged to the Bethune-Cookman infield.
 
The Owls added a run in the top of the fourth off the end of a Presutti sacrifice fly to left, allowing pinch runner Kaitlyn Cunningham to score on the play.
 
An Ennis two-run home run to left center for the Owls in the sixth produced the final 7-0 score.
 
Bethune-Cookman (6-21) threatened in the bottom of the third and sixth innings, respectively, as the Wildcats worked a runner on base, but were ultimately kept off the scoreboard in the end.
 
FAU starting pitcher Gabby Sacco collected the win to bump her record to 11-2 for the season. The save was taken by Summer Clark – her first of the year, as she pitched the final three innings with two strikeouts.
 
FAU was led offensively by Ennis' 3-for-3 effort, including her two-run homer. Ota also added a hit for the visitors.
 
Meanwhile, the loss went to BCU starting pitcher Victoria Guzman, dropping her season record to 1-8 on he campaign. She pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats, allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO: FLORIDA ATLANTIC 6, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 6
Haley Parks and Shania Owens each tallied hits for Bethune-Cookman, as the Wildcats fell 6-0 in the nightcap of a midweek softball doubleheader at home to Florida Atlantic on Tuesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Florida.
 
Florida Atlantic (21-10) put three runs on the board in the first inning.
 
Cammeo Presutti scored first when she came home via an error charged to the Bethune-Cookman infield. Becca Jones and Abby Ota scored two plays later when the BCU infield was charged with its second error of the inning.
 
Bethune-Cookman (6-22) looked to answer in the home-half of the first inning when Kayla Traylor reached on an Owls error, but was ultimately left stranded at first.
 
The Owls scored a run in the second inning when shortstop Sommer Baker rushed in from third on a wild pitch, pushing the visitor's lead up to 3-0.
 
A pair of FAU runs in the top of the fourth made it 6-0.
 
Becca Jones sent a fly ball to deep right, plating pinch runner Kaitlyn Cunningham from third for the 5-0 lead. Holley Peluso followed two plays later with a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Presutti to come in from third.
 
The win was collected by FAU starting pitcher Lynn Gardner, moving her record for the year to 7-3, as she went four innings in the circle for the Owls, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters. The save was taken by Ainsley Lambert for her first of the season, as she worked the final three innings with two walks and two strikeouts, respectfully.
 
The loss went to BCU starter Alyssa Lopez, as she fell to 0-3 on the season. She tossed all seven innings for the Wildcats, giving up six runs (two earned) on 10 hits, two walks and posting five strikeouts.
 
FAU was led at the plate by Ota's 3-for-4 effort, as she also scored a run. Presutti, Riley Ennis and Sommer Baker each had two hits for the Owls.
 
For BCU, it was Haley Parks and Shania Owens each registering a hit in the game.
 
The Cats return to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play this weekend when BCU welcomes Jackson State to Sunnyland Park for a three-game league series beginning Friday, March 24, at 3 p.m.
