Bethune-Cookman Drops 3-2 Game to FAMU

Wildcats give up lead in seventh inning

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jane'a Mobley registered a three-run scoring home run to center field Friday afternoon lifting visiting Florida A&M to a 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball victory over Bethune-Cookman in the series opener between the two sides at Sunnyland Park.

Bethune-Cookman (13-28, 11-8 SWAC) led 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning.

Florida A&M (18-18, 11-7 SWAC) put the first two runners on in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for Jane'a Mobley to deliver her second home run of the campaign – a three-run shot to straightaway center field.

That put the Rattlers up, 3-2.

BCU scored the game's opening run in the home-half of the fifth inning when Kallie Earlington – having walked to lead off the Wildcats at-bat, scored on an error in Jordyn Villanueva's at-bat.

The Wildcats added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Essence Gibbs reached on an error, allowing shortstop Kayla Traylor to score from second on the play.

The Cats began the game with a scoring opportunity in the first inning after Haley Parks led off with a double, and advanced on a wild pitch to position herself at third with nobody out. But the Cats came up empty as FAMU starting pitcher Lauryn Peppers retired the next three batters in order.

Peppers earned the win in the circle for FAMU, moving her record to 6-7 on the year, working the complete game and allowing two runs (unearned) on three hits, three walks and five strikeouts. The loss went to BCU starter Halyne Gonzalez, dropping her record at 11-13 for the campaign as she went all seven innings in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits, one walk and picking up five strikeouts.

The Rattlers were led offensively by Mobley with a home run on a 1-for-3 afternoon.

BCU was paced at the plate by Traylor, Parks and Ciera Clark each tallying hits on the day.

The two teams meet for the second game of the weekend series Saturday at 1 p.m., back at Sunnyland Park.
