DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman falls to 1-1 to open SWAC play as they fell, 79-69 to Grambling State, Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.
The start to the game saw Bethune-Cookman (6-9, 1-1 SWAC) and Grambling State (5-11, 1-2 SWAC) combine to start the contest one for their first seven from the field through the first four minutes of play. The trend continued with both teams combining for a 2-10 mark from the floor as B-CU held a 10-5 lead at the 14:34 mark of the first half.
The Wildcats took their largest lead of the half at 15-9 on a pull-up three from
Jakobi Heady before consecutive Grambling State buckets made it 15-13.
Grambling State finally pulled ahead, 25-23 on a three ball by Mikale Stevenson at the eight-minute mark. A 9-2 run continued for the tigers as they went up 28-25 before
Dhashon Dyson's and-one tied things up at 28-28.
An outstanding start to the game saw Dyson post 17 points in the first half as his contested three put B-CU up 34-33.
Kintavious Dozier put the Tigers in front once again on a driving layup, and Grambling State closed out the half up 39-36.
The Tigers began to pull away after the break, moving in front 52-40 on 4-8 shooting to start the second half.
Jakobi Heady cut the lead to single-digits with 6:52 to play on a step-back jumper from the elbow that made it 62-53. Two minutes later
Dhashon Dyson's floater cut the deficit to just seven with five minutes remaining.
Dozier's free throws put Grambling State in front double-figures again with under two to play, and B-CU could not recover as the final horn sounded and the Tigers took the contest, 79-69.
- Dhashon Dyson led B-CU with 21 on 6-19 shoowing including a perfect 7-7 from the line, six boards, seven assists, and a steal.
- Jakobi Heady and Reggie Ward Jr. also scored in double-figures with 17 and 13, respectively.
- Heady led the Wildcats with seven rebounds. He also added four assists.
- B-CU out-rebounded the Tigers, 35-22, including a 16-3 advantage in offensive boards.
- Grambling State scored 23 points off turnovers to B-CU's 12.
Bethune-Cookman returns to Moore Gymnasium Monday, Jan. 15 for an MLK Day matchup with Southern. The contest, the second of a doubleheader, will follow the women's game with a projected tipoff of 7:30 p.m.
