Zion Harmon chased down Kevin McGaskey for a game-saving block as B-CU staved off a Prairie View A&M comeback to improve to 5-5 on the season, Saturday evening at Moore Gymnasium.
In typical Wildcats fashion, Bethune-Cookman (11-12, 5-5 SWAC) opened the contest with a two-handed
Jakobi Heady slam as they jumped in front, 6-0.
That lead ballooned to 20-8 at the under-12 media timeout as Prairie View A&M (9-14, 4-6 SWAC) started the game only 4-13 from the field with four turnovers.
The Panthers began to find their footing, cutting it to single digits on Chris Felix and-one that made it 25-16.
Dhashon Dyson's three ball with seven minutes in the half made it a 30-18 lead.
Damani McEntire's pull-up three ball gave B-CU a 20-point advantage with five to play in the half.
An 8-0 Prairie View run continued to keep things interesting at 38-26. The Wildcats headed into the half up 40-28 on 53 percent shooting from the field.
The B-CU lead dropped to 10 two minutes into the half as Charles lane drained a pair of free throws to make it a 42-32 ballgame. The lead fell to single digits as Brian Myles' layup made it 44-36.
The comeback continued for the Panthers, as Orlando Horton's free throw made it just a five-point game at the 15-minute mark. The Wildcats called timeout up just 49-44 with 13 minutes to play.
Zion Harmon helped stop the bleeding with a floater and-one that made it 59-50.
Reggie Ward Jr. put up an and-one of hi sown to put the Wildcats up 66-53 with nine minutes remaining.
Dhashon Dyson's three continued to keep the Panthers at bay to keep B-CU in front at 70-61.
The Panthers enslaught continued as PVAMU cut it to three at 74-71 before
Derrick Carter-Hollinger Jr. answered with a hook shot at the other end to keep B-CU up five with four minutes to play.
The Panthers threatened to cut things to a two-point game, but Harmon recovered from a B-CU turnover for a game-saving block of Kevin McGaskey, and B-CU held on for the 84-78 victory.
- Jakobi Heady paced B-CU offensively with 21 points on 9-14 shooting with four rebounds, a block, and a steal.
- Zioon Harmon, Reggie Ward Jr., and DJ Carter-Hollinger, and Dhashon Dyson also scored in double figures for B-CU.
- Harmon added five assists. Damani McEntire posted Six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and three steals.
The Wildcats return to Moore Gymnasium Monday night as they host defending SWAC champs, Texas Southern. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
