LORMAN, Miss. -
Reggie Ward Jr. enjoyed a career night, but a slow-shooting first half was too much to overcome as the Wildcats dropped a 69-54 contest to Alcorn State, Saturday night at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex.
After the two teams found themselves tied at 8-8 through six minutes of play, Alcorn State (8-17, 7-5 SWAC) jumped out on Bethune-Cookman (12-13, 7-5 SWAC), as Kendall Jeremiah's free throw capped off a 13-3 run to put the Braves up 21-11.
Zion Harmon cut the deficit to eight points with three minutes in the half on a layup that made it 27-19, but the Braves entered the half with their largest lead of the night, 13.
The Braves showed no signs of letting up after the half, increasing their lead to 19 on a Jeremiah Gambrell jumper that made it 48-29. An 11-2 B-CU run put the Cats within 10 on
Reggie Ward Jr. layup. His three ball with seven minutes remaining pulled the Wildcats within single digits for the first time in the second half.
That marked the last time B-CU found itself that close, as Alcorn closed the door on their 69-54 win.
- Reggie Ward scored a career-high 27 on 9-12 shooting and 3-4 from three. He also recorded a rebound and two assists.
- Zion Harmon was the only other Wildcat in double figures. He scored 11.
- Jackobi heady led the Wildcats in rebounds. He had seven.
- The Wildcats shot just 27 percent from the floor in the first half compared to 50 percent after the half.
- B-CU scored 14 points off turnovers.
- Both teams saw only nine points scored from their bench.
The Wildcats will look to sweep the season series against Jackson State on Monday Feb. 19 in Jackson, Miss. Tipoff is set for 8:30 pm EST
