B-CU Stopped by San Diego State

Three Wildcats collect a hit each in the game

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Micaela Macario slapped her first home run of the season Friday afternoon, as San Diego State topped Bethune-Cookman 7-0 in softball action at Big League Dreams Complex as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

San Diego State (8-5) jumped on the board right from the start with leadoff batter Micaela Macario's solo home run – her first of the season, to deep right field that set the tone for the opening inning. In all, the Aztecs plated six runs in the opening half-frame.

After Bella Espinoza followed Macario with a single to right – eventually swiping second as well, the bases became loaded for right fielder Angie Yellen, after Makena Brocki walked and designated player Alyssa Garcia reached on an infield error. Yellen collected an RBI walk to make it 2-0 for the Aztecs.

Jade Ignacio singled to left, plating another run. Katie Goldberg tripled to left, driving in three more runs that bumped the lead out to 6-0.

SDSU made it 7-0 in the top of the second when Yellen pushed across Espinoza courtesy a sacrifice fly to right.

The Aztecs put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, forcing the run-rule with a pair of insurance runs.

Ignacio walked and pinch hitter Macey Keester singled. AJ Murphy picked up an infield single to load the bases, setting the stage for Kate Farren to collect two RBIs with her single to shallow center that got past the glove of a diving Joslynn Davis, thus providing the final 9-0 decision.

The win went to SDSU's Cassidy West in the circle as she went the distance in a five-inning outing, scattering three hits to go along with a trio of strikeouts. With the win, she picked up her first victory of the campaign in moving her record to 1-2.

The loss went to B-CU's Halyne Gonzalez, as the junior right-hander went five innings on the rubber for the Wildcats, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

The Aztecs were led in batting by Macario, Espinoza and Murphy with two hits each.

B-CU received hits from Joyce Bloome, Brooklyn Scott and Briana Velazquez, respectfully.

The Cats conclude play in this year's edition of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday when facing off against Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount back at Big League Dreams Complex. First pitch for B-CU vs. Cal State Northridge is slated for 12:30 p.m. ET.
