BATON ROUGE, La. - 46 points combined for
Zion Harmon and
Dhashon Dyson lifted Bethune-Cookman to a weekend-opening win at Southern, 67-61, Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
It was Southern(16-12, 10-5 SWAC) that took the early lead, 11-6 on a Jariyon Williams layup at the 14-minute mark before Bethune-Cookman (15-14, 10-6 SWAC) tied things at 14-14 two minutes later on a free throw by Elijah Huls
Seven straight from Southern made it a 21-14 game with six to play. They led by as much as eight with five minutes in the first half on a Jaronn Wilkens free throw that made it 26-18.
B-CU continued its push, scoring seven straight and nine of the game's next 10 points as they tied things again at 27 on a layup by Yousouf Timera.
A pair of free throws were the difference as Southern took a two-point lead into the half.
After a
Dhashon Dyson Jumper tied things at 29, Southern once again rattled off seven straight to go up, 36-29 through three minutes of the second half. The Jaguars reached their largest lead of the game with 15 minutes to play as Derrick Tezeno made it 42-31.
Another 7-0 B-CU run brought things within reach once again with still 12 minutes remaining.
Jakobi Heady's fast break dunk tied things once again at 46-46 with nine remaining.
Zion Harmon's three with eight remaining gave the Wildcats their first lead of the half at 49-48, a lead they would never relinquish.
Southern continued to hang around, but the Wildcats took care of business at the charity stripe as they rounded out the 67-61 road win.
- Harmon and Dyson each finished with 23 points. on 5-10 and 6-13 shooting, respectively.
- Dyson and Derrick Carter-Hollinger Jr tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight each.
- Harmon added three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
- All other Wildcats combined for 21 points.
- B-CU scored 17 points off of turnovers, and 23 fast break points.
- Southern scored 32 points in the paint.
The final Monday night contest of the season for B-CU is set for March 4 at 8:30 p.m. as B-CU takes on SWAC-leading Grambling State.
